“Not just because of The Soprano's...”
Reviewed January 15, 2013

Worth a visit to step back in time to an old fashioned corner ice cream parlor complete with a soda counter. Nice solid lunches, great ice cream and, yeah, Tony Soprano was right: great onion rings.

“I don't see it ...”
Reviewed December 19, 2012

Two types of people go to Holstens ... locals who have been going forever and like the tradition more than than food ... fans of the TV show the Sopranos who go because this is where the last scene was filmed.

If you are a Sopranos fan, you will be dissapointed to learn that you are unable to sit in the famous Soprano booth unless you are at least a party of 4. There is a sign that tells people not to sit there unless there are at least 4 people in the party. Outside of that, there is no really any reason to go to this place because the food is just plain terrible.

The prices are fairly cheap. I don't think there is anything on the menu over $10. Most of what you find here is fried or grilled. I should have had the burger, but ordered a grilled cheese sandwich instead. This literally tasted like someone made it on a George Foreman grill in college. One side of the sandwich had burned edges and the other side was just bearly toasted. It almost seemed like someone just made some toast and put a slice or two of cheese in between the bread. No butter taste on the bread ... it was dry and bland. There was literally 1 or 2 slices tops of tasteless American cheese in the sandwich.

The ice cream sunday came in an awkward dish. When you touched it with a spoon, chocolate oozed all over the table. The ice cream did not taste creamy, like good homemade ice cream should. It was overly sweet and way too sugary. I didn't like the sunday at all. I looked around at what other people had and nothing really looked appetizing. Dairy Queen looks better.

The restaurant is very old and looks like something you'd expect to see in New Jersey ... maybe the 70s or 80s. I suspect anyone who gives this place 5 stars either just got out of prison and is not used to real food ... or they are overcome by nostalgia from eating here so much, or seeing it on the Sorpanos. Of course I ordered the famous Sopranos onion rings. It was literally a grease soaked clump of onion rings ... they didn't even care that they had all fused together in the fryer. Amazing.

Unless you need to satisfy some craving to see the place where the last episode of the Sopranos was filmed, this is some of the worst food you'll try outside of a college dorm. I hate to bash a 'local joint' because obviously people have been coming here for a long time ... but this was just some of the worst food I've eaten. I really wish I could say better things about it or think I came on a bad day. But, I don't think that is the case.

“The Best Ice Cream”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

Don't bother with the other ice cream shops in the area. This is the authentic real deal All homemade ice cream and toppings, and there is also a candy counter with homemade items. The butter pecan is the best - a little salty with the sweet, accompany that with the hot fudge - delicious!

“Classic ice cream and basic luncheonette food”
Reviewed April 29, 2012

Ice Cream parlor with great classic ice cream flavors. Basic menu for food items- great when you just feel like having a light bite to eat. But the draw here is definitely the ice cream, the candy and the nostalgia.

“Great Old Fashioned Ice Cream parlor and diner”
Reviewed April 8, 2012

I have been going to Holsten's for many years. They make their own ice cream and fountain favorites. The hamburgers and all of the dishes are fresh and delicious. Bring the kids and the entire family. I assure you that you will not be disappointed!
