“Beautiful area”
Reviewed March 20, 2014

I used to go to Mohican Outdoor Center but it has changed NOT for the better. It used to be unique but the AMC has made it into a generic place for people who want to start hiking. It is not thru hiker friendly any longer. It is no longer the family feeling environment that it used to be. The cabins are nice...the tenting areas are nice and the trails are beautiful but it has become a stamped out AMC money making lodging, "hiking" program restrictive place. Sad really.

This is where my family and I choose to spend our Father's Day weekend every year. The area is beautiful. Short ride from Long Island (120 miles). Great hiking trails including the AT. Ran across deer, woodchucks, squirrel, chipmunks and a lone timber rattler sunning itself. No bears this time. Catfish Pond is wonderful to swim in and kayak/canoe around. This is an AMC lodge so the staff is wonderfully accommodating. Pricing is very low also. Choose from camp sites or cabins. You cannot go wrong at Mohican Outdoor Center.

We spent a night in a walk-in Indian Point camp site early this month and loved it. We had the entire area to ourselves (other than the ducks and woodpeckers), and both evening and morning are gorgeous from this spot. A gem! Friendly staff in the lodge willing to answer any questions rounds out a perfect outdoor experience.

Mohican is a wonderful, restful place and you can't help but feel the friendly AMC spirit. NOT BLAND though! I was chatting with some other guests who were berry picking when an adolescent bear came loping across the path. He was going to the berry patch too - no problem! - but I kept my distance. A deer came grazing under our screened-in porch, lovely to watch. The lake isn't very cold for swimming in July - & tastes sweet compared to my chlorinated gym pool,

Room Tip: Don't forget the insect repellant!

I’ve stayed here several times and each time I love it more. It is a great location for hiking as the AT passes right through. Kayaking on the lake at Mohican is also nice. AMC runs some excellent programs here as well. The staff here is awesome. Chris, Dave and his dog Moe are usually on hand. They are so helpful and friendly and if you’re lucky to be there on a Saturday night with a group you can catch Dave and his band play in the main lodge. There is no alcohol served here, but you can bring your own and enjoy the show. Always a relaxing treat after a long day of hiking.

The first time I stayed with my fiancé and our dog in the “stone house” (the only lodging that allows pets). It was November so the water was turned off for the winter in the bathroom so there were no showers or toilet in the house, but there was running cold water for cooking. The house had two bunk rooms, a full kitchen, sitting area with wood burning stove and a full supply of wood to burn. It was great and if we knew how to properly work a wood stove it may have been warmer. Alas, we were freezing the first night in the bunk room. The second night, we shut all the doors to other rooms and slept in the sitting area near the stove and it was great.

During the summer we also visited twice and camped. Camp sites provide have picnic bench but no fire rings. One drawback is that ground fires are not permitted at the sites, but there is an area by the lake that you can go to have a fire and hang out. Bear boxes are available throughout the campground. Showers are available in the main lodge for $3 includes a towel.

I also took part in a couple group events once staying in the Blueberry Hill bunkhouse and the other time staying in the adjacent Black Bear bunk house. Both were newly refurbished and very cozy. All are heated and have running hot and cold water with showers and full kitchens. Group events generally include breakfast and dinner. Food is good is served buffet style and they always provide a vegetarian option.

The lodge, bunkhouses and stone house were all very clean, and well appointed with all the necessities for cooking.
