We made reservations for Saturday night at 8PM. With all the positive reviews on here, we were very excited for a wonderful dinner.
The experience started on a positive note. We forgot to get wine and the hostess offered a liquor store delivery service which worked out perfectly. She sat us quickly and the views of the ocean were beautiful. Our server, Rebecca, started out very nice. She opened the wine and told us the specials. She also told us about some menu items which was helpful.
That's when the positive experience ended. We ordered two appetizers, a soup and salad and shared one entree. Every dish was just mediocre, some not good. The appetizers were the goat cheese ravioli and mussels. The ravioli were probably the best part of the meal. The sauce on the mussels did not compliment the mussels very well.
The Caesar salad was fine. We also got new england clam chowder. At first it was lukewarm so I asked Rebecca to warm it up which she did. From then on, Rebecca was absent. She never once asked us how any of our dishes were. Basically she disappeared.
Our entree was scallops cooked in lobster shells. The corn based sauce was just too strong and again, didn't compliment the scallops well. And again, no comment or concern from Rebecca. When we finished out meal, she was nowhere in site. We had to ask another waitress to have Rebecca bring us the check. When she did, she just placed it on the table without saying anything - no "how was your meal?" or "would you like dessert?" We were blown away by the whole thing and couldn't figure out what happened.
So overall a big disappointment, especially with all the hype around this place. It's not just worth it. There are other places in Belmar that are better. I won't mention them as I don't want this review to come off like a plug for another place. They are easy to find.
It's a shame too. The place does have a gorgeous view of the ocean.
