“An Early Industrial Town in the Heart of the Pine Barrens”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

Batsto village is a well preserved early industrial town in the Pinelands of southern NJ that operated from the mid 1760s, providing iron armament and shot during the Revolutionary War, through the mid 1950s. The village contains many original buildings including a saw mill, general store, blacksmith shop, post office, Victorian mansion as well as homes and a school for the people living and working at what was a company town. While Batsto is worth a visit any time if you area, try to visit when the saw mill, blacksmith shop and post office are open an operating in addition to the mansion which is open more regularly. Unfortunately, these features are not open and operating as often as when I grew-up in the area but one can check for the occasional special weekend they are operating on their website.

“Great experience of the Pine Barrens”

Wonderful location in the heart of the Southern Pines. Nice escape for a day from the beaches or AC. A low key and relaxing place to enjoy the beauty of the Pines, the tea colored streams and the history of the place.

“Fascinating story of little-known part of New Jersey history”
Reviewed February 23, 2013

All my NJ friends said there's nothing to see in the Pine Barrens. They're wrong! The story of the manufacturing in this part of NJ was all new to me, and very interesting. The technology used was frequently not the most current, and the area was so isolated and small in scale that the owners did not invest to update it. Consequently, the local industries were pretty much gone long before the dawn of the 20th century. This story is well told at the visitors center, along with a good description of the unique soil and flora, and their impact on the area. The village itself is ok, pretty standard for this type of attraction, but gives the visitor a good sense of the scale of the settlement and the location of some of the key manufacturing facilities. The staff at the visitors center were friendly and fairly knowledgeable, though they seemed not to have thought deeply about why the local manufacturing died out so early. It made for an interesting conversation.
