I used to lead bird walks here every January. There are few places in New Jersey that have a better variety of ducks here in the winter, including the beautiful Harlequin Duck, which is very hard to find in NJ. The lighthouse itself is an interesting historic structure, and the view from the top is breathtaking. Well worth a visit any time of the year.

This is an iconic landmark. Barnegat Light House or Old Barney as the locals call it is a 1 class light house, meaning where ships that come from Europe would aim for as a destination. Once they saw it they could take a right turn for New York or a Right for Delaware Bay. The light house is in excellent shape thanks to the terrific group of volunteers who manage the overall structure and grounds. This light house was designed by (then) West Point Graduate Leutenant George Meade. George Meade when on to fame as the General (under General USS Grant) who defeated General Robert E Lee in the Civil War.

If you are in the neighborhood, you must give Old Barney a climb to the top and enjoy an exhilirating view of LBI and the inlet. There are quite a few steps involved, and you need to be careful if you are easily out of breath. Just take your time and enjoy the view(take your camera too)
