The hotel and dining room were great. Service was a problem once on the porch and the country club. They appeared to be short of staff but the food was unbelievable with the new chef. The fitness center was the best I have ever seen in the country!!! Our room was very spacious. The golf course is only 9 holes and in poor condition.

We recently returned from a great vacation at the MVG with our 6 and 4 year old. Starting with our excellent service from the reservation agents who made sure we got a great room from my family, our quick check-in, and excellent porter service upon arriving set the stage for a fun and relaxing vacation. Overall the staff was well informed and went the extra distance in almost every opportunity. A bellboy/porter even went as far as to print out hiking information in the area for my family, and tracked us down in the tavern to go over it with us. The room was comfortable with charm from being an old hotel and the view was stunning. The food was very good, service was prompt and informative, and the breakfast buffet was excellent. The additional pancake they gave my kids in the buffet (free for kids) was so good my son begged me to get the recipe from the chef. The pools are great, as my kids spent hours in them, and the pony ride was all my daughter talked about. All the large library rooms with board games, the game room downstairs, and the big plush sofas to read books makes the hotel a fun experience no matter the weather. We did not put our kids in the day program, but those that were enrolled looked like they were having a blast. If you do go, participate in the scavenger hunt - its fun and you see the whole hotel. The only problem I saw was the wait staff at the country club could use some additional people, the wait for lunch and drinks seemed annoying to some. The only addition this hotel needs is a nature trail to get the kids and families into the surrounding woods to walk off the very good food. We plan on staying here often.

This was our third trip to the MVG and each trip has been better than the last. The MVG is a grand old hotel that has been wonderfully restored very recently. Virtually everything seems new, freshly-painted, and nice. The new veranda provides a spectacular view of the mountains. In fact, the MVG has basically a 360 degree view of the mountains. We ate only in the Tavern, but the food was good, the portions were ample, and the prices were fair. Be sure to ask for a tour of the wine cellar, in which you can eat dinner if you book far enough ahead of time. take the tour of the hotel too.

The staff was uniformly friendly and competent.

The outdoor pool would be a bit crowded on a hot, busy weekend. But, it's very nice and the waitress service is a real plus. the indoor pool and hot tub and the health club are all first-rate.

The golf course is well-maintained and will stroke your ego. It's difficult enough to be interesting, but it's not hard enough to bring you to your knees.

This has to be the only grand hotel with a real barn with horses, donkeys, goats, llamas, rabbits, sheep and chickens. A lot of fun for children of all ages.

Finally, do take advantage of the hiking in the nearby mountains. I don't know how much help the staff would be in selecting approrpiate hikes. But there are lots of guide books and maps available form the Appalachian Mountain Club and others.

This is such a beautiful hotel with so many things to do on site. We would have stayed longer except for one major problem. The food service. If there were any other restaurants close by, we might not have minded so much, but this hotel is quite a distance from anything. Every experience we had with the hotel dining was just bad - breakfast, lunch and dinner. My guess is they have a very difficult time finding and retaining the staff. Breakfast was fine. The usual "ballroom turned into breakfast buffet" fare - much better than what you'd get at a Holiday Inn Express for sure, but a little pricey. It came to over $70 for 4. Lunch was really mediocre. Ridiculously long wait for the service - close to 45 minutes for a BLT and a hamburger and the food was cold, but by the time we got it, we were so hungry, I was afraid to send it back because I thought I might not see it again. But dinner was the worst. Over an hour to get the appetizers, and another 50 minutes before the main course was served, and again it was cold - and one of our dishes had been microwaved out of the fridge. Hot outside and ice cold inside. But it was really the wait that was killing us. We were one of two tables in the entire restaurant at the point. The maitre d' apologized and comped us the meal, which might have made me feel better but we were still so hungry. My theory is the chef had either quit or was otherwise indisposed and the poor dishwasher was left to put together a meal. And no matter how much you hustle, if you are one of two waitstaff to serve two large rooms, there's no way you're ever going to give anyone good service. My advice to management is to hire more people and give them better training

On the flip side, it really is beautiful and very relaxing. It was the first time I've ever stayed in a resort and didn't feel compelled to go sightseeing. I could see the most beautiful mountain views right from the front porch with my feet up and a drink in my hand.

My kids really want to go back (they said they'll bring snacks this time). Does anyone know if the restaurant experience has improved?

Does anyone know if the food/staffing st

We (parents, 2 older teens) only had 2 days to spend at this resort, but loved the place and would love to return. Our son said he'd like to stay there a couple days before returning to college. The setting is gorgeous, as the photos available at Tripadvisor can show, and rooms with views -- they upgraded us to one just to be nice; we hadn't even asked -- really have gorgeous views. The outdoor pool is heated, pretty, and has wait staff/attendants; it is run like a country club. The service staff is extremely nice and wants to help, though we had no great needs to test their skills. The indoor fitness center is very complete, and has a pool and hot tub, too; looked great, though we didn't use it.

Food was very good, at a fair price. Rooms were very clean, nicely appointed; beds were very comfortable. Hallways and common areas (several libraries/game rooms, lobby) were very nice. It's very close to any number of hiking and biking trails in the area. Only knock is that the concierge didn't have particularly good suggestions of places that we later found were quite close and good for hiking -- could have done a better job of guiding us in that regard. One that she suggested actually was closed that day, which you'd expect her to have known.

We already HAVE suggested this resort to friends.

I just returned from my second stay at the Mountain View Grand, with my 2 teenagers and my parents. Our visit was perfect. The place is beautiful, they just put a large addition to the veranda, which is the place to be all day long to relax, read, and enjoy the view. Our rooms were perfect, in the front, again with fabulous views of the surrounding mountains. The outdoor pool is large and heated, my kids had a great time. There are 2 pool tables, air hockey, pinball, etc. all included for kids, and adults to enjoy. The place seemed busy, all different kinds of people...families with small children, couples, and everyone seemed to be having a great time. I think this is a wonderful place to stay, and while not the least expensive choice, I think it is a great value for this caliber of accomedations.
