“This is a great family place”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

On our second trip to the Mountain View Grand, we had a great experience. We skied locally at Bretton Woods and enjoyed the swimming, skating and other winter sports offered at the hotel.
The spa is also a wonderful place with good prices and variety.
On both stays our room was spacious and very clean with a lovely view.
Dining; I was a bit surprised to hear that fine dining was only available to 14 and over since we had made reservations but I understood when I saw some other children in the casual restaurant. The casual restaurant offered an excellent breakfast buffet. It was a 10/10. For lunch and dinner it was only good-not great. We would have liked more choices, maybe changing the menu from day to day with a a few more specials would be good. The prices were affordable.
The sleep was restful. I would have loved a softer pillow choice though. A couple of choices were available but mostly the spongy ones.
The axe throwing was also quite fun. Hotel might want to spring for a free shirt/hat for the winner. All in all, this is a great place for kids and adults alike. We will definitely be back again.

My husband and I really enjoyed our time at Mountain View Grand during the recent Nemo snow storm. With the "blizzard of the century" forecast for our travel day, Friday, we called the hotel and were easily accommodated for an arrival on Thursday, one day before. When we finally arrived on Thursday evening after a 6 hour drive from our home, we were greeted by Tim, the bellhop, graciously offering his help with our bags and valet parking. From that moment on, I knew we were in for a treat!

LOCATION: The property is located in a valley with spectacular mountain views in every direction. As the story has it, the hotel started when some stranded coach travelers found their way to the property during some inclement weather (then a farmhouse), and were wowed the next morning when they awoke to see the stunning views. They decided to stay a couple of days, and a hotel was born. Arriving in the darkness of night, followed by 2 days of snow made for a similar experience when we awoke on Sunday morning - just lovely!

ROOM: The room, especially upon first impressions, was very spacious, comfy and clean. We reserved a standard room, and were given one with a small lounge area with a pull-out couch, which would have been great for a family. The walk-in closet was as big as ours at home (helpful because of all of the snow gear we brought), and the bed was super comfortable. The bathroom had all of the modern amenities, including basic toiletries. But, I felt some improvements could have been made -- the room lacked a refrigerator, DVD player and robes, which would have helped to improve our stay. Also, there was some problem with the warm water for half of our stay -- lukewarm showers at best. And, the room is drafty! Because it's such an old building, you would expect this, but standing near the windows as it snowed made me shiver. I know it's an old building, but the windows were not replaced with more high-efficiency double pane ones - brrrrrrr! And, once you take in the room and start looking at the details, there was some paint starting to peel and show it's age again. And, the previous reviews concerning the sound traveling through the walls are all true - we could practically hear the conversations being had by the family that was staying in the room next to us, especially the whiny, bratty behavior of their children.

FOOD: We are not typically the type to eat hotel food, and often go out of our way to find the local establishments. But, given the snowy weather, we hunkered down and gave in. The food was generally good, with some dishes being better than others. There was a $15 credit per person to be used for breakfast in the mornings, which was typically adequate to say that breakfast is included in the room rate. Weekday breakfasts are ordered off the menu (anything from Eggs Benedict to omelettes to parfaits), and there is an extensive breakfast buffet offered on weekends ($15). The brunch buffet ($20) is an additional option on Sundays. We tried the Fine Dining one night in the Wine Cellar (definitely call way in advance to make reservations during your stay), and we thought it was very good, but not the best. One standout during that meal was the Lobster and Scallop Stew (a cream-based soup, really) - highly recommend. The servers were always attentive and friendly.

VALUE: I think that this hotel offers a really great value for your money. With the included breakfasts and activities all day (including kids camp / day-care), I can see why the place was literally overrun with families. Lots to do for a reasonable price.

ACTIVITIES: We participated in many of the resort activities the weekend we were there, both included and paid. One of the highlights of the weekend was snowshoeing on the resort's groomed trails ($12 for snowshoe rental). We also did the dog sledding, which was definitely something different for us. Although we thought it was pretty expensive for what we walked away with, it's not an experience that you have the opportunity to have every day. Boy, those dogs are strong! But, the ride, although advertised as 45 minutes, lasted probably more like 15. First, you are introduced to the dogs, and then you help attach them to the reigns, and then you go on your ride. But, you are helping to maintain the dogs (which are rescued, by the way), so I guess it's a good cause. Snowmobiling was also a great activity to try, since you take advantage of NH's designated snowmobile trails! We thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon cider and cookies served in the lobby, as well as the hotel tour, which was very informative! Who knew Michelle Obama stayed here! And, a morning visit to the farm was a nice treat. But, there were some disappointments among the activities -- the choices for the movie theater are limited to pretty old movies (only 1 movie was from 2012). And the indoor pool was pretty much unusable by us because it certainly was not a relaxing place -- although we tried to use it on several occasions, it seems to be constantly overrun with unruly and noisy children.

CLIENTELE: During the weekend that we stayed at the resort, we quickly realized that the peaceful and grand hotel lobby that we we greeted with on Thursday night is quickly transformed into a romper room by Saturday morning. This place is literally overrun with families on the weekends. Especially, it seems, those whose parents seem to feel it acceptable to allow their children to run the halls unsupervised until way past bedtime (at 11:30 on Saturday night, I had to emerge from our room to yell at a group of kids who thought that relay races were an acceptable form of entertainment at that hour). I know that this is not really the hotel's fault, but the place was literally a zoo filled with scores of undisciplined children. Not once did I see one parent reprimand a child the whole weekend we were here. This atmosphere of chaos really detracted from the overall generally wonderful experience. If this is a concern to you, it may be best to visit during the week, when it seems to quiet down.

Overall, this was a really great experience, and we will plan to return in the future, especially with children. I will, however, be mindful that not everyone will be so endeared to hear them as I probably will. For a couple's retreat, however, stick to the weekdays. We look forward to returning during different seasons, as the resort really capitalizes on the seasonal activities.

My family usually goes on a tropical vacation in the winter but this was our first-ever "cold" vacation. I had "liked" the hotel on Facebook and the daily posts convinced me I had to book a trip for the family. We have a 10 year old son and a 3 year old daughter so we needed a diverse range of activities. The experience did not disappoint on any level! The hotel itself takes you back in time and is truly beautiful. The staff, to a person, went above and beyond to make you feel welcome and at home. We loved every activity - tubing, X country skiing (my 10 yr old LOVED this!), broom ball (my 3 year old LOVED this!), axe throwing (my 47 year old LOVED this!), the campfire with the s'mores, the hot cider, the wine tastings (I loved this!). We booked massages which were amazing. The pool, game room and movie theater were perfect. The movie theater is exceptionally cool because they play random family friendly movies throughout the day or you can pick a movie and reserve a time - and they bring you popcorn! The dining was expensive but SO worth it. The manager David was amazing, as was Ben, as was one of our waiters - Derek - all of them! They were so used to children they made you feel at home. We did the wine tasting in the wine cellar which was a great experience. We played board games as a family in front of the fire in the library - straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting. It was just the kind of vacation we wanted and needed. We will absolutely be back and I highly recommend it to families.

Spent 2 nights there while skiing and snowshoeing. Great location convenient to Bretton Woods and Cannon Mtn. 2 kids, 2 adults. We had basic room with 2 doubles and my only complaint was that it was too hot and had difficulty controlling temperature. The room was great, lots of space, big bathroom, very comfortable sheets (rare in most hotels), turn-down with chocolates on pillows both nights. What sets this place apart from other places is the service...Outstanding in all aspects. The tavern food was average, we ate there the first night, but ordered pizza from town the second night. The lobby area was very comfortable to hang out in, we spent mornings there playing games while having coffee and hot chocolate. At night they have a very good piano player. The outdoor activities were great: skating, snowshoeing, axe throwing (yup!), chicken bowling, s'mores over open fire near skating rink (with hot chocolate). There was a farm nearby and also dog sledding (not sure if you could actually take a ride or if it was just co-located there...maybe a training facility). Swimming pool was average, although the mural has to be seen...really neat with a scavenger hunt. Gym was above average (although we didn't use), even had ski exercise equip't.
I would highly recommend paying the little extra to stay here as opposed to something that is just a place to sleep, it's so much more enjoyable. I'm giving rating of 5 despite the temp issue and the average food because I would absolutely stay here again without even looking at other options

Room Tip: Heat rises, so the 3rd floor is warmer than the others. Plan accordingly

This hotel has to be one of the finest we have stayed in. It is one of four grand hotels in New Hampshire and we have been to two so far. The Mountain view is the place to go on a long vacation do everything or just relax. Excelllent accommodations, the Tavern was excellent with good food and spirits. We have stayed at the Mountain View Grand the last 3 out of 4 years for a weekend with family friends. We always love all the fun winter activities right on site- iceskating, bonfires with s'mores, cross country skiing, etc. We also enjoy the movie theatre and always book a couple movies to watch during our stay. In the past, customer service has been excellent. This last stay in January 2013 over a 3 day weekend was not quite up to par. The hotel was full and the staff seemed to have difficulty handling the volume of people. We had several issues with our room- the heat would not turn down past 72 degrees, and although we reserved a cot, we got an air mattress that kept losing air. We were assured the issues would be resolved but they never were over the 3 days we were there. The breakfast buffet, though expensive, is delicious and worth it. I still give the MVG 4 starts because it has a lot to offer for families and is in a beautiful location!

Room Tip: Corner rooms are larger and have a nice large bathroom!

Long drive from boston but once in the mountains the drive was wonderful. You feel like your in the middle of nowhere but have everything you need. The view, in any direction, was worth the price of admission. Great place for romantic weekend or for outdoor lovers. I felt like I was in the movie," The Shining." You'll know what I mean when you see it. Only complaint, no passenger elevator. So a room on the third floor is tough. Other than that we loved it
