We wanted coffee before we headed to the ski mountain and the self-service option was quick and easy. And the coffee is local from the White Mountains Region of New Hampshire. We didn't stay for breakfast but everything coming out of the kitchen looked really good.

The old Waterville Valley Coffee Emporium has reopened under new management as The Blue Moon Cafe. The space has been nicely renovated with a cozy mountain theme, adding more seating, a small bar area, an expanded menu, and dinner weekend nights. Definitely a worthwhile addition to the Waterville Valley restaurant scene.

We joined friends for dinner on the Saturday night of President's Weekend, celebrating a birthday. There were seven of us -- a bit of a push, as the seating is best configured for four (with comfy wood booths and smaller tables), but they made it work. The small, cozy space has been charmingly redecorated with White Mountain memorabilia, and is to my eyes the nicest public room in the Valley. We ordered drinks from a short-but-smart wine and beer list and perused the new dinner menu (Blue Moon is serving dinner on weekend nights), which is short but eclectic and full of tempting items. At our table, we ordered salads (nice mix of fresh ingredients), chili, a noodle bowl, lobster pie, lamb sliders, and a sirloin tip sandwich. Everything was freshly prepared and surprisingly good, with appealing, simple presentation.

In the spirit of full disclosure, the service on the night we visited was just OK. The young bartender was friendly, but our server was slow and not very proactive, and we had to repeat order items several times to get things right. She was pleasant enough, however, and the overall warmth of the space and tasty meals really carried the night.

The Blue Moon serves breakfast and lunch everyday, and dinner on weekends. Overlooking a small mountain pond, many tables and the outside seating have a great view. The Blue Moon fills a niche and provides a very inviting alternative for a weekend night out. Give it a try -- I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
