“Sad & Disappointing”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

We visited the Birchwood Inn (restaurant) in the past both prior to change of ownership and under current ownership. We will not return (given the apparent trend of decay).

It's a shame - as this once was on our "local top 10" list.

1. Yes - the location is classic New England, historic and charming - albeit out of the way for some (but not us).
2. Yes - the Inn is old and appealing for that reason.
3. Yes - the Server was polite and friendly.
4. Yes - the Owner was friendly and gracious.
5. And yes - if you are swayed by English accents - you will be pleased.

BUT, that is where the apparent positive attributes end.

1. The food was poorly prepared - dishes were overcooked (even burned on the edges / dried out), portions were small and the menu limited.
2. The furniture (tables, chairs, etc. on which we were served) was badly worn out, mismatched (seemed like old kitchen tables & chairs from a house) and apparently unclean.
3. While the prices were not aberrant, they were ultimately, too high - for the quality we experienced.
4. It would appear as though the Owners simply do not have enough cash flow and reserves to put into the physical facility, a higher quality food prep staff, dinnerware, better food, etc.
5. This recent experience was unfortunately consistent with our last one as well. We wanted to give them another chance before writing them off, returned hoping for a change / improvement. But alas....

In a nutshell, we were embarrassed - as well as for the Owner.

We hope that our feedback will be taken in the manner delivered - detailed, objective and with the hope that it will be taken to heart after some objective self-evaluation - and changes made. This will, we also hope, result in growing the cash flow and profitability - permitting the variety of corrections we identified, among potentially others.

In the past we recommended The Birchwood Inn to many. We can no longer serve as a positive reference.

We welcome feedback - especially negative feedback - in our jobs as that helps make us better once we internalize and act on that feedback. We hope the Owners will do the same here.

This is just our opinion - no more valuable or correct than any other. We could be completely incorrect in our review and conclusions. Form your own.

The title I stole from Nick, one of the owners of the Birchwood Inn. We stayed there while attending an opera and piano recital at the Monadnock Music Festival in nearby Peterborough NH. It was an absolutely charming experience. The owners are great hosts and both have a wonderful sense of humor. They are a treat just to converse with. The inn itself is really old but has been kept up and gives the flavor of a colonial setting. It gives a comfortable and warm feeling. Our room, the Oxford room is nicely decorated and the bed was great. I loved having the worlds smallest tv but there is also an upstairs lounge with a larger tv. (Not important for most folks staying at a B and B but it was the premier of Breaking Bad). Andrew makes the breakfasts and they were top notch, I had the "full English breakfast (a fryup) which was delicious and plentiful. I really can't say enough good things about Birchwood. If you like good food, a quiet pretty setting and great service and conversation, this is the place for you.

What a charming little B&B! Leave it to the English...

It's beautifully located in a very quiet area (though the birds woke us up in the morning, I guess us city folks aren't used to the sounds of nature).

Our host was delightful, and the room was very old fashioned and English.

Breakfast was great (and there's nothing like some show tunes on the radio in the morning ;)).

All in all, it wasn't a fancy place, but it was very adorable and the room rates were great!

Traveled to NH to visit the kids and The Birchwood Inn was down the street. What a great time we all had in the pub! Cold, snowy and dreary night out was erased by the warmth and good cheer from Nick and crew. Comfortable accomodations with a great breakfast the next morning. Thanks gang!

After a perfect hike, we stopped into the Inn for drinks and a late afternoon lunch. We were greeted by a very friendly server and a mother of one of the owner who was sitting on a rocking chair on the sunny front porch. We sat at the bar and loved our time talking with the owner and enjoyed the home cooked food by the owner's partner. This is a great experience. If you like perfect beer on draft, hot delicious English comfort food and good people, take a spin up to this perfect little hamlet of Temple with a cool English pub. We also took a peek at the rooms which are funky and comfortable.

Birchwood Inn is run more in the style of a B&B by two Brit ex-pats. Located right in the middle of Temple NH on Rte. 45, its accommodations are very traditional, the hosts very genial, the food good - AND they have a pub as well!

The Birchwood Inn is located in Temple, NH and is not on the road to anywhere but is a wonderful destination. The Inn's original building dates from 1775 with the "new" addition built in 1800. As is typical of these old buildings, the floors slant and creak, the doors don't quite close, but the accomodations are very nice. We stayed in the Stratford Suite which includes a very small kitchenette. The king-size bed was very comfortable and the room was surprisingly quite given the bustling, crowded tavern/restaurant just downstairs. The breakfast was hearty and the inn keeper, Nick, provided a lot of information on things to do in the area. The room rate is comparable with other bed and breakfasts in the region. One note: the stairs leading to the rooms are a bit steep and could be a problem for some individuals. Our only regret is that we didn't choose to dine at the tavern in the evening, something we will rectify on our next visit.
