The performances are first rate, the theatre is comfortable with no bad seat in the house, and a gem to have for those who enjoy theatre.

“The oldest summer theatre in the US”
Reviewed April 15, 2014

This theater runs from July thru August. Each week there is a different play. They do not employ troupes that travel from one venue to another. Each play is individually casted with sets made right on scene. This is a theater goers paradise.

“Equity Actors Doing Real Theatre”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

This summer stock theater is not what you would expect in a tiny New England town. No mediocre acting here. Equity actors mostly from NY come summer after summer to put on a different show every week for eight weeks. The shows are wide ranging from comedy to serious drama. Last year was a great example when I saw both The Full Monty and Steel Magnolias. They delight with excellent performances in a small theater setting. At intermission make sure to have the homemade lemonade and chocolate chip cookies.

“The darken stage slowly illuminates---the performance commences.”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

Our friends treated us to a production of “Steel Magnolias” and we were totally won over by the quality of the acting, the depth of character, and the milieu of the theater itself. Having a small seating area, the audience quickly develops a friendship or at least an understanding with the all-women cast. We thoroughly enjoyed the play.

“An unexpected pleasure!”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

We had friends visiting for a few days, and wanted to find an out-of-the ordinary experience (there's only so many quaint towns and shopping one can do!). We bought tickets for the dinner/theatre combo offered by Barnstormers in conjunction with the Highland House B&B.

Our travel out to Tamworth, a short 20 minute drive from our home, left our guests in wonderment of what they would actually find "way out here". Tamworth is like stepping back in time, when life was not as hectic and demanding.

Our meal at the Highland House was outstanding. I will add a couple of caveats to that - the weather we had was perfect ....had it been raining, the experience would have been not nearly as pleasant, because the 'dining room' is a converted coopersmiths, with open, screened sides. And with dinner being one size fits all, it might be off-putting to some (there are a multitude of accommodations that will be made if they know in advance i.e. vegetarian, gluten free etc).

That being said, we arrived with our BYOB selection in hand, and were greeted by Zoey, the official greeter and meter (a darling English Spring Spaniel). She escorted us to the waiting area outside the dining room, a collection of chairs in the grass. A server appeared with glasses and an opener for our wine, and we were able to enjoy the tranquil setting and conversation with our guests. Dinner is scheduled at 5:30, which leaves plenty of time to make the theatre in time for the 7:30 show at Barnstormers. The dining room is rustic, with elegant touches bringing it to a beautiful level of comfort. We had attentive staff, delicious, freshly prepared food, and homemade ice cream for dessert. Zoey was out of sight for most of dinner, and was sad to see all the guests leave.

The Barnstormers Theater is in Tamworth Center. It is a comfortable venue, though not 'city theatre'. The seats are accommodating, and there is ample cooling/heating/ventilation. The show itself was presented by a group of wonderful stage actors who do yeoman's work throughout the summer in order to present 8 straight weeks of different performances. Our show was raucous and entertaining, leaving us chuckling all the way home. As an added bonus, there are chocolate chip cookies and lemonade available for purchase during intermission.

Our visiting guests marveled at the availability of such venues, and I'm sure will be talking about this experience once they are home.

Highly recommended - both Barnstormers and the Highland House!
(a note - dinner at the Highland House B&B is only available through the dinner/theatre package, which is available on Wednesday and Saturday evenings)
