Just returned from 3 night stay with a 5 yo and an 18 mo. If you have little kids the pool is great! But be sure to ask about the proximity to any of the pools because some rooms are quite far away. We stayed in the west building so the huge pool was steps from our door. However, the room badly needs an update and not only did we have to climb many stairs to get to our room, once inside the 2BR suite you had to walk down several steps to get into each bedroom (room 602). This made it a bit treacherous with our 18mo (and only one of the bedroom doors shut properly so we had to be vigilant about him not falling down the other set of steps into the second bedroom!) The staff were all wonderful! My older son really enjoyed the xbox kinect stations in the west amenities center. We enjoyed Sunday brunch in the restaurant but it was way overpriced - especially with two little ones who probably only ate about $5 worth of food! We came prepared with some supplies because we had read that the resort is far from stores - it's about 20 mins down the hill to town. Locally, we also enjoyed the McAuliffe-Sheppard discovery museum and Kellerhaus (great store, chocolate and make your own sundaes!) I would return in the summer to take advantage of the grounds, hiking, playgrounds and pools but I'm not sure I could get my husband to return unless the rooms are updated. Overall a nice trip if you are prepared for the negatives.

Room Tip: Rooms need an update but are very clean. West building puts you closest to the largest pool and game...

We just returned from a weeks stay! I was initially disappointed because our room in the East building was on the lower level, but it turned out to be a great room and a convenient location. Sure there are some things that could use a little spiffing up, but what hotel doesn't. The kitchen had everything you could ask for and the 2 bedroom unit was very spacious and looked to be recently updated. There was excellent internet access too.

We loved the pool in our building just as much as the one with the slides in the Amenities building. What I really appreciated was that the pool water was heated to a very comfortable temperature (at both pools) and the room was also. It was so nice to be able to get out of the water and not be cold. There is nothing worse than going to an indoor pool and the water is too cold to enjoy. Even though we had to drive to the big pool it was easy to find a place to park and they have lockers, showers and plenty of towels there.

We did have brunch in the restaurant on Sunday morning. There was everything that you could want and the omelet station was excellent. The service was very good, but the price did seem a little high.

We can't wait to go back again, the grandchildren really enjoyed themselves and I bet the grounds are even more beautiful in summer and fall. The kids got to go sledding and the only reason we didn't skate was the warm temps softened the ice too much,

Room Tip: We had Unit 120 and it was great!

We have stayed at Steele Hill many times and always in the oldest building, West building. Each time in a different 1 bedroom suite, but never in a suite that looks anything remotely like what is on their website or shown to us several years ago when we were their for a timeshare sales promotion. Every suite we have stayed in certainly could use upgrading. We had hoped over the years to see more of that, but, sadly this time the corner one bedroom suite felt even smaller than the ones in the past and poorly designed. Yes, the king size bed and pillows were very comfortable. Yes, the appliances were much better than the past, but, the one bathroom sink seemed weird being outside of the bathroom, practically next to the dinning table. 2 trash containers without lids were right up against the dinning table chair, of which, you would not pull out, to sit at the table. Noise from the other units can be a problem because some guests just aren't respectful of the guests around them. Yes, the views are spectacular when you can see them. Yes, the kids pool in the other building is perfect for children, but, adults beware, if you slide too fast you can go up and over the lip of the slide onto rocks! The Hilltop Restaurant is very good. Waitress, Lauren, greets you with a warm friendly smile and provides impeccable service! She gets an A+ on our score card of waitresses, thank you Lauren. For that matter all the customer service people were great. Sadly, the restaurant does not do breakfast, but, Heritage Farm not too farm from Steele Hill, does and they are worth the short ride. They are open Mon-Sat 7:30-12:30 for an awesome family farm breakfast. WE will return to Heritage Farm throughout the year. We wish Steele Hill would offer rooms that look like what they advertise on their website for one day our children and grandchildren will out grown the children's pool.

Room Tip: We asked for an up-dated room, on the walk in level, (for health reasons) this time and found oursel...

I am glad to hear feedback from a longtime owner at Steele Hill. I believe there is some confusion about the room type that you stayed in. Per your description, you were in a 1 bedroom East Suite. The East building is the original building at the resort. Our West units are connected to the large amenities building with the big pool and were built a decade or so after the East construction. We currently only offer 2 double beds in our West 1 Bedroom Suites, although we are looking to add some rooms with Kings in the near future. This misunderstanding explains why the website pictures do not seem to line up with the room you stayed in.

It sounds like you enjoyed the pool during your stay. The amenities building is a great escape from the winter weather, especially with the season we have had recently. Thank you for pointing out our great views. We are currently working on a selective cutting project to open up the views even more for future guests.

I am glad to hear Lauren provided exceptional service during your visit to the Hilltop Restaurant. The entire restaurant staff works extremely hard to provide a positive dining experience. I will be sure to let the Food and Beverage Manager know that Lauren stood out during your recent visit with us.

We appreciate your long standing relationship with the resort and look forward to seeing you again in the future.

Sincerely,
Rob Robillard, General Manager

Keep in mind that Steele Hill is located a good 20 minute drive away from anything. Pushing my poor car to its limit up the mountainous roads, the massive Steele Hill Resort finally came into view. We had called ahead and asked about early check-in, which was granted to us so checking into our 1 bedroom suite was painless. Our room was located in the West Resort, which had seen some renovations mostly to the West Lobby and indoor pool area; the guest suites could definitely use some updating. All in all we were mostly satisfied with our suite which featured a full kitchen, dining area for 6, a big living room, bedroom with 2 double beds (we had requested 1 king or 1 queen), and a separate bathroom. The best feature of the place was, without a doubt, the very generously sized balcony off the living room which boasted beautiful views of the mountains and foliage.

Steele Hill is a good option if you don't mind being rather secluded from the major attractions and from most restaurants, stores, and gas stations. They have an on-site restaurant, Hilltop Restaurant, and a bar, Tova's Tavern, which is attached to the restaurant in the south section of the resort. We ate at both the restaurant and the bar and were pleased with the quality and taste of the food both times, especially the apple tart dessert. Service at both can be slow but perhaps we are just used to our fast paced environment in NY.

The resort has many amenities available to hotel guests including: two indoor pools, indoor hot tub, sauna, racquet ball court, billiards, ping pong, an arcade, outdoor volleyball court, horseshoes, basketball court, and soccer field, as well as various different hiking/walking trails, a small pond, and an 18 hole golf course. There is also an outdoor pool which is open in the summer. There are also movies for rent, fireplace chemical logs for purchase, and basic toiletries and food/drink items for sale in the main check-in area which is convenient since all stores are located 20-30 minutes down the mountain. So there is definitely plenty to keep you busy if you don't feel like leaving the resort.

The service was one thing we had a problem with. We had run out of toilet paper (there was less than 1 roll when we checked in) and we called the front desk to request more. Hours passed and no one came so we called again and the woman we spoke with was very rude to us. It took a very long time for someone to finally come with the toilet paper. On another occasion, we spoke to the same woman about using the basketball court on the premise and she was extremely sarcastic and rude toward us. Cleanliness was another issue. Along with everything being very dated in the suite, most of the dishes and glassware had to be washed before we could use them because they were pretty dirty. Also, another thing to be aware of: you will have to carry your luggage up two flights of stairs in the West resort and if you're staying on the second floor, you will have to carry everything up a separate winding staircase to get to your suite.

Or room was in disrepair, table tops worn out, jacuzzi cracked, master bedroom door hinges broken off on the bottom and door didn't shut well, dried urine on one toilet seat and another bathroom the toilet seat was not attached, couch ripped and the hallway always smelled like someone had just cooked fish. People visiting at the pool were grossly overweight, tattooed, pierced and just dirty looking. At 6:17 am the family staying above us started running around (the kids), jumping, sounded like wrestling, and stomping their feet. Called the front desk multiple times and nothing was done about it. The third time I called the receptionist said she would check with the housekeeper who was sent out to ask them to keep it down and she would call me back....I'm still waiting. I asked to have our room changed and was told that they were fully booked because it was a vacation week. (I've read this in other reviews).
The restaurant....the food is okay but over priced for what it is, poor no horrible service! Stay away! I needed a vacation to rest when I got home exhausted from the noisy people and paper thin walls. HORRIBLE place to visit and will NEVER return!

I am sorry to hear you did not enjoy your experience with us. I disagree with your characterization that the resort is a horrible, motel experience and I believe that the majority of our guests would defend this position.

We take feedback very seriously and our management team will be sure to review your statements to see if there are lessons for improvement in them. That being said, describing our valued customer base as dirty-looking seems completely off-base, untrue and hurtful.

Unfortunately during the busy vacation period we did not have availability to move your accommodations. The resort is in high demand these days and occupancy can run very high. I will be sure to touch base with the desk staff to reinforce the importance of exercising clear and timely communication with our guest.

Sincerely,
Rob Robillard, General Manager

My sister and I took our 4 kids, rented a suite over vacation. We were so disappointed in the "suite". It was smelly, small and very awkward overall. Had to go up two flights of stairs to get in the room and then carry luggage down a flight of stairs to get to the first floor. The pictures on line were nothing like this room. We were in the buildings attached to the pool area. On a more positive note, the pool area is great for kids, and there is a bar right outside the pool where you can get food (which was a little pricey but good)also. The skating pond was okay, bumpy but it had snowed the night before. The hills onsite were great for sledding, tubing and even a little snowboarding. My sister complained about the room and it was discounted without a blink of the eye which leads me to believe this happens all the time. The front desk explained they do updates one room at a time. My advice is to all is to make sure you get an updated room. The pool area and lounge appear new and beautiful, the hallways, set-up and our room however, were ancient. Good luck.

Room Tip: Make sure you confirm you are in an updated room, that is easily accessible.

I am happy to hear your family enjoyed the pool area. Our Food and Beverage Staff has done a great job expanding the offerings at the Oasis Bar near the pool. I will be sure to let them know you took notice.

It sounds like the kids enjoyed swimming and spending some time outdoors while staying with us. The grounds staff does a tremendous job working to keep the skating pond open during the winter. Big storms can be a process to clean up, but guest generally enjoy the skating pond. Sledding also sounds like a memorable experience.

I am sorry to hear that you felt the room was awkward. I can assure you that the pictures we promote online are direct representations off the room as I was the manager who oversaw the photography project. We have many different room layouts at the resort. If you choose to visit with us again in the future I would recommend reading through our accommodations page. This resource offers pictures and videos of each room with descriptions of the layout.

In terms of the discount the desk offered you, I can assure you this is not a common practice. We take guest satisfaction very seriously and consistently measure comps and discounts. That being said, once our staff determines there is an issue they are trained to make a decision.

Thank you for staying with us at Steele Hill. We truly appreciate your business and hope you and your family consider visiting with us again in the future.

Sincerely,
Rob Robillard, General Manager

My fiancé and I have been to this resort a few times and have really enjoyed our stay. It is set in a beautiful location and the rooms are very comfortable. We really enjoyed the pool. The food at the restaurant was very good as well. We plan on visiting again soon.
