“Best homefries ever!”
Reviewed July 24, 2011

Hubby decided we should go out for breakfast this morning, so he googled "best breakfast in Salem" and Sammy J's was at the top of the list. Well, I don't know if it's the best in Salem because this happened to be our first breakfast out since we moved here. But I can definitely say that it was very, very good.

I had eggs benedict and the eggs were poached perfectly. Hubby's breakfast included a generous portion of ham along with sausage and bacon. The big hit of the meal was the homefries. They were absolutely delish - fried red potatoes with a great bacon flavor, probably cooked in the bacon fat. And they were obviously freshly done. I would go back just for the potatoes!

Service was friendly, the food came very hot, and the bill was quite reasonable. This is the kind of place where people become "regulars" and the servers recognize you as soon as you walk in the door.

Be sure to bring cash - I'm pretty sure they don't take credit cards. And note that this is a breakfast restaurant until noon, then it's an ice cream shop!

And it's located at 144 Main St., not 67 Main St. Not sure if they've moved recently but it's definitely 144 Main St.

“Best breakfast in Salem”
Reviewed July 9, 2007

My family has been going to Sammy J's for 10 years and have never had a bad breakfast there. I meet 3 girlfriends evey Wednesday there for breakfast and they also love it. The coffee is Donahue Brothers and the menu is incredible. They always have daily specials that can't be beat. The Sammy's french toast is the best. I have tried IHOP and the other "breakfast" places in Salem and they can't compare to Sammy's. The waitresses are friendly and the food is always served fast and hot. I highly recommend this eatery.

“Good Breakfast”
Reviewed March 11, 2007

The clerk at the Red Roof Inn recommended Sammy J's for breakfast. It was the best eggs and home fries I've had in a long time. Prices were reasonable. Coffee was fresh. The menu was very extensive. Service was pleasant despite a very busy restaurant. They are open until noon.
