Once again we ventured the 10-miles, or so, up route 1A to Ray's with hopes of having a good meal. We were pleasantly surprised by the fact the food is still very good and the portions are large. The menu hasn't changed too much, with a few different specials on the special board (look for it, or you won't know about them, they don't tell you nor have it printed out). The prices are getting a little step, you need to use good judgement. Lobsters seemed very high priced compared to the other restaurant we visited (we didn't have them there), but hell it is on the ocean with a lovely view. Service was ok, for a slow night, but our needs were paid attention to, and the food and drinks good. Definitely still on my list of 'must visit' restaurants in NH and well worth finding.

While out for a drive on a beautiful spring day we stopped at Rays for Lobster rolls. My husband got the "cold" lobster roll which is lobster meat mixed with mayo on a hot dog. Roll. I got the "hot" lobster roll which is lobster meat sautéed in butter served on a roll. I also requested a side of mayo. Since we are native to New England and have eaten lobster rolls at many places, including home, we definitely have our own opinion of what a lobster roll should be! Simple with no frills!
Rays served us exactly that with a bag of chips. Just what we wanted! Great location by salt marsh. Unfortunately we could not see the ocean across the street as there is a huge pile of rocks all along the road as a barrier. However, you could easily cross the street and climb the pile for a view.
We had friendly service at the walk up window. There was plenty of dining inside and out. There is also a gift shop.

We ordered lobster rolls, lobster stews and lobster pie. The lobster pie was $19 and the rolls were $16 each. The pie tasted frozen and heated up with 3 small pieces of old lobster meat. All entrees had tasteless small amount of lobster. The lobster rolls were smaller and with less lobster than the kids lob dogs at the River House at downtown Portsmouth af a fraction of the price. The lobster stews were cup size with pieces of flavorless meat in a milk broth at $10 each. We paid $92 for this lunch and had to eat the oyster crackers to fill ourselves. There was no water to wash hands in the women bathroom. We have had plentyof great eating experience at roadside food places with plastic forks and papr plates. This place is way overpriced and food is sub quality. Very disappointing experience. Wish we had gone elsewhere.

there were four of us and we ordered 3 lobster rolls and 1 lobster salad. we asked for onion rings first. though the dining room was almost empty, the onion rings took over 25 minutes to come out and they were so, so. then another long wait for the lobster. we each took a bite and spit it out because it tasted so rotten. one of the claws was green and not from the tamale. the french fries were hard as a rock, overdone, flavorless. even the iced tea was terrible. then we had to wait for our waitress to send back the lobster. it's hard to understand why a seafood place wouldn't serve fresher lobster. and it wasn't cheap. I'd never go there again.

My wife and I go the Rays in summer and fall. We love the portions and always take home our leftovers. Their clams are the best on the NH seacoast. We often take the chowdah to go. Will be back again and again
