Courtyard Portsmouth

Spent two nights at the Courtyard Marriot since it was the least expensive hotel near the downtown area. Typical Courtyard yet the room we were in needed attention - furniture well worn and the bathtub was in desperate need of re-caulking. Lots of mildew in the corners and along the floor. The only amenities in the bath were two small bars of soap and a bottle of conditioner. Asked for a quiet room and was on the 4th floor (little hall noise) but faced Route 95 which was anything but quiet at night. Worth the extra $$ to stay at the Garden Hilton or the new Residence Inn.

My wife and I stayed one night (August 10, 2010) at the Courtyard in Portsmouth, NH. Nice location near downtown yet near I-95. Great bed. Room very nice. We had two minor issues with the room which were immediately adderssed. Breakfast buffet reasonably priced and had nice variety. Fitness room fantastic. Quite large with three cross trainers, three treadmills, free weights, and an assortment of other machines. Four large flat screen TVs. Towels and cold water supplied. We didn't use the pool but the indoor pool was quite large and had more than ample lounge chairs, inside and out. Hotel offered free internet. The speed was fantastic at 2 meg+ Many hotels offer free internet but the speeds are so slow, we use our aircard.

We were looking for a place to stay that was around $100 a night and in an easy place to get in and out of while we traveled up and down the coast. This served the purpose just fine. This isn't a resort where you hang out at the hotel it's where you sleep after a long day of sightseeing etc.
I wouldn't call it a 3 star hotel but it was clean and had a little fridge to keep snacks and drinks.

They have re-engineered the closet space to make room for a fridge, a microwave and a by-the-cup coffeemaker (sorry, no espresso). It looks upscale--or like an airplane galley--but it really made it difficult to empty our hanging bag. There was no place to hang the bag while emptying it and then no space to store it when we did. The amount of hanging space was cut in half. This is definitely not a place where folks make long stays. I hope they don't plan on this "upgrade" for all the hotels.

The location is right on the highway (as are many hotels these days) . On the one hand, it is easy to find but on the other it is very noisy. Fortunately, the fan can be set to run constantly and it blocks the noise from the highway.

We had some trouble on check in. The room we were assigned smelled of cigarette smoke and we asked to have it changed. We did not even have to return to the from desk; we phoned from the old room with our complaint and were met 5 minutes later at the new room with our new keys.

Would I stay here again? Definitely. Our room was clean and well-kept and that is what we are looking for when we have to spend the night on the road.

Stayed in the hotel for two nights over the Labor Day weekend for a wedding at Flag Hill Winery. Reserved two rooms and asked at check in if I could have rooms that did not
face the highway. Marie was very accomodating and gave me two rooms close to one another on the third floor. The rooms were beautifully decorated with great beds, flat screen TV's frig & microwave and very quiet. Pool and hot tub were good and the workout room was very well equipped. We spent one night just sitting around the pool catching up with family and using the internet services.
The hotel is ideally situated about five minutes from the center of town and it worked out well.
We drove into town and parked in the garage for .75 per hour. Much better that having to feed the 2 hour meters. Had breakfast in Popovers and lunch in Muddy Rivers. Spent time in the Stone Wall Kitchens shop, dinner by the water and a 1 1/2 hour guided tour around the harbor section of Portsmouth with Sylvia. Very informative and enjoyable. Annabells ice cream was delicious. It seems like we ate our way through the town. It was truly enjoyable and I would certainly visit the area again. And I would stay at the Marriott again.

We picked an unusually busy weekend to visit Portsmouth, and could only find a room outside the city itself. We have stayed at many Marriott properties over the years and generally been satisfied. Our luck ran out at this facility. This is just a poorly managed hotel and nothing is done for the guests to make up the shortcomings. The biggest problem was housekeeeping. Supplies were never replenished, even when requested, and the number of towels left for the room kept declining every day. The worst was when we returned to the room at 3;30PM to find it had not been cleaned. A call to the front desk resulted in the response: They work until 5:00, which got my tresponse I wasn't prepared to be the last room cleaned so they promised they would come immediately. A second call was needed at 4:00pm to ask that they get someone here at once, and they arrived 15 min. later. The explanation was that it was a busy day. That is a lame excuse for either not having enough help or giving priority to incoming guests. It is inexcuable to have a room uncleaned at 4:15PM.To make matters worse, all they did was make the bed and empty the garbage cans. No vacuuming, no cleaning the bathroom, etc. The next day, the main elevator broke and nothing was done for guests other than posting a sign to use a 2d elevator in a remote corner of the building. I may be wrong, but when these things happen, wouldn't it be smart to give the guests a small amenity such as a free breakfast or drink at the bar?

Pros: The rooms are spacious and well equipped. beds are comfortable, and an HD 32 in TV is a nice touch. Easy access to downtown Portsmouth.

Cons: If your room is on the side of I-95, be prepared for a LOT of road noise, all night long. Poor housekeeping, as noted above. Don't leave the pool area for the outdoor lounges, as all the doors are self locking and you can't get back in, nor is there a warning this will happen.

My husband and I stayed at the Courtyard over the July 4th weekend. We had a newly renovated suite which was immaculate, well designed and spacious. The staff was so pleasant especially Shannon, she was so helpful. The location of this property could not have been more convienent to all the attractions and museums. I highly recommend this property we were so glad to have the opportunity to stay at such a wonderful hotel.
