One of my lifetime favorites. On our annual trip to this terrific little town, we had to drop in and see his new upstairs bar/small plate restaurant/waiting room for his main restaurant. Listen, everything the great Massimo touches, turns to a fine and elegant example of what an eating and drinking place should be and, once again, he nailed it. The space is beautifully paneled and appointed and welcoming. We had a drink and some triple cream on impossibly thin crackers, followed by a pasta dish---and everything iwas perfect. Massimo cruised through the room, spreading his warmth to everyone----there's no way in the world that you would ever expect to find a restaurant of this class in a small provincial city like Portsmouth but there it sits ---greater than ever!

We were unexpectedly in town on a snow filled night and were referred here by the motel front desk. We sat upstairs in the bar area and enjoyed the good food, great service and fine wine. Our waiter was most accommodating ...even prepared a special vegetarian dinner for one of our party. Only down side was that the jazz music was a bit loud ...otherwise a great find in this wintry town.

I ate here a few days ago with my boyfriend for my birthday and it was great! We were greeted by the owner when we arrived. He was very nice and accommodating. Our server, Erin was attentive and friendly. We ordered three courses and drinks, which came out to be a little pricey but for the quality of the food, it was definitely worth it. We will definitely go back!

My husband and I went last night for our anniversary dinner. I picked it after reading all the wonderful reviews. I was looking for delicious food that was cozy and romantic - our experience was more than we had hoped - perfect! We were greeted by Massimo upon entering who placed us in a cozy corner table. We had a phenomenal waitress who was so friendly and was able to describe our dishes perfectly. We loved our appetizer (fried oysters) and our entrees. Massimo gave us complimentary limencello as a Happy Anniversary gesture. The restaurant was packed with smiles and laughs. We will definitely be returning.

We recently visited Massimo during Portsmouth's Restaurant Week where one is offered a 3-course dinner for $29.95 - an amazing deal. We had visited Massimo many years ago and had never found a convenient time to return until now ... wish we hadn't waited so long! We feasted on a Jonah crab cake, pork tenderloin accompanied by a warm apple compote, and braised short ribs, all professionally served by our tuxedoed waiter. Next visit we want to try Upstairs at Massimo offering small plates and charcuterie. Hope to get there soon!
