“Another great dining experience @ Massimo's!”
Reviewed December 26, 2012

We decided to try out the Thursday "Bistro Night" menu and were very happy with the choices and quality, at a very reasonable price! As always, attentive and very personable service that paces your meal (over 2 hours) at just the right level for savoring each course and never feeling rushed.

Great accomodation of my wife's gluten allergy, they can and will go "off menu" to whip up something that diners at adjacent tables would gaze longingly at.

Only suggestion would be to expand the wine-by-the-glass offerings to include higher quality options.

Whenever we want a special meal in a great atmosphere, we head to Massimo's!

“Stellar Service menu lacking”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

Disappointed to see so little seafood on the menu; salmon and lobster were the only offerings at this Portsmouth treasure. Our party of 6 loved the Osso Buco and the special "Fallen Souffle" starter with watercress salad. Pasta (gnocconi and ravioli) along with the three (menu) salads were excellent also. The braised meats felt tired...overwhelmed with too salty sauce and the duck was just so-so. The service was top notch and it feels like a (Boston) North end gem with it's basement geography. With tuxedo'd wait staff and expensive prices I would think parents with babies and jean-clad patrons would be discouraged; unfortunately not so.

“Great dinner”
Reviewed December 3, 2012

We had a wonderful dinner at Ristorante Massimo.
Squash soup appetizer was to die for.
Eggplant appetizer was delicious - fried eggplant with lemon marmalade, ricotta and arugala.
Salmon entree was very good.
Homemade Papparedelle Bolognese was good, not great. Sauce a little watery.
Service was attentive without being intrusive.
I would definitely go here again.

“Consistently Excellent”
Reviewed December 2, 2012

I've been eating here for 18 years and the experience has never been less than excellent. The braised meals are the best I've ever had. The pastas are expertly prepared. The sauces offer the perfect compliment to every dish! Massimo's is the finest of Portsmouth's fine food restaurants.

While I've focused on the food, the atmosphere is elegant, quiet and sophisticated with knowledgable and attentive staff. The wine list is extensive and represents the best of both Italian and Californian selections. Owner-operator Massimo is attentive to every detail and welcomes every patron. This experience is worth every penny.

“Decent meal, but way overpriced, and not worth the wait!”
Reviewed December 1, 2012

Made a reservation for six, months in advance, and arrived approximately ten minutes early. We waited in lobby for over :40 before being seated at table! Food was very good, but servings were quite small.

Ladies were satisfied, but men left hungry. When we finished eating, we asked for the check, then waited :20 more for it to arrive! We waited another :20 but nobody returned to get it, so my wife brought check to the hostess herself.

Decent meal, but we will absolutely NOT return! Still hungry, we walked to Gilly's after dinner and all agreed the $3 cheeseburger was better than our $400+ dinner!

Gilly's is an ABSOLUTE must, but you can skip Massimos, and save a small fortune in the process!
