We had a wonderful dinner at Ristorante Massimo.
Squash soup appetizer was to die for.
Eggplant appetizer was delicious - fried eggplant with lemon marmalade, ricotta and arugala.
Salmon entree was very good.
Homemade Papparedelle Bolognese was good, not great. Sauce a little watery.
Service was attentive without being intrusive.
I would definitely go here again.

I've been eating here for 18 years and the experience has never been less than excellent. The braised meals are the best I've ever had. The pastas are expertly prepared. The sauces offer the perfect compliment to every dish! Massimo's is the finest of Portsmouth's fine food restaurants.

While I've focused on the food, the atmosphere is elegant, quiet and sophisticated with knowledgable and attentive staff. The wine list is extensive and represents the best of both Italian and Californian selections. Owner-operator Massimo is attentive to every detail and welcomes every patron. This experience is worth every penny.

Made a reservation for six, months in advance, and arrived approximately ten minutes early. We waited in lobby for over :40 before being seated at table! Food was very good, but servings were quite small.

Ladies were satisfied, but men left hungry. When we finished eating, we asked for the check, then waited :20 more for it to arrive! We waited another :20 but nobody returned to get it, so my wife brought check to the hostess herself.

Decent meal, but we will absolutely NOT return! Still hungry, we walked to Gilly's after dinner and all agreed the $3 cheeseburger was better than our $400+ dinner!

Gilly's is an ABSOLUTE must, but you can skip Massimos, and save a small fortune in the process!

My wife and I dined at this restaurant during "Portsmouth's Restaurant Week". We ordered off the restaurant week menu as opposed to the "bistro menu". The appetizers were delicious (rack of lamb and artichoke with crabmeat). The entree that we both selected was the Lobster in butter sauce on top of ricotta filled ravioli. The entree consisted of a lobster tail and two lobster claws, the ravioli and spinach. The flavors were excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed it. For dessert we both ordered the chocolate cake. It was a little dry but still flavorful. With hindsight we said we should have ordered the pumpkin cheescake.
This restaurant is on Penhollow street. You have to desend a flight of stairs into a cobble stone walled dining room. It is very quaint and gives you the feeling of dining in Italy.

Highly recommend this retaurant for quality food and excellent service.

We both had the lamb rack of 2 for an appetizer; cooked just right. My friend had the strip steak on a bed of broccoli with mashed potatoes; raved!! I had the lobster on a ravioli bed served with sauce and spinach, great!! Service is very attentive and there is a lot of attention to the presentation of the food. Atmosphere is intimate and comfortable with paintings of Italy.
The pumpkin cheese cake was wonderful, but the chocolate cake was too dry for me!!
Spent almost 2 hours with a cocktail and then dinner; will definitely return.
Massimo himself spends a lot of time socializing with the customers!
