“Excellent stay”
Reviewed July 9, 2007

We stayed at the Hilton Garden for 2 nights in June 2007 as a first port of call on a road trip in New England, Canada and upstate New York. We flew into Boston and appreciated the easy one hour drive to the delightful small town of Portsmouth - a great start to our trip.

We enjoyed the spacious comfortable rooms, the friendly helpful staff and the terrific location. The lovely historic harbour, breweries and restaurants are all within easy walking distance.

We would definitely stay here again and recommend to others.

Just came back from a weekend in Portsmouth where we stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn. I travel every week for work and have stayed at a number of Garden Inns and found this property to be one of the best as far as decor and amenities. The location also cannot be beat as you are within walking distance of all the restaurants and sights of Portsmouth (we did not take the car out for 2 days). We also found the staff extremely friendly and helpful especially the wait-staff on Saturday when we had breakfast in the hotel. Overall the place to stay if you are visiting Portsmouth.

If you're Canadian, think twice about staying at this HGI property. The hotel does not accept Canadian currency to settle hotel bills. My wife and I were stunned when the manager would not accept cash (Canadian currency) to settle our bill at check-out. We can understand a reluctance to exchange currency, but this Hilton property is the first one in 20+ years of staying at Hilton hotels to have absolutely refused to accept Canadian currency in payment of a room bill.

What was really galling to us was the attitude of the desk staff and manager on duty. Completely unfriendly and callous in their dealings with us. All of which was particularly disappointing in part because my wife and I are Hilton HHonors Diamond tier members (and have been for many years).

On the other hand, and in fairness to the property, the rooms are clean, the beds comfortable, and the location convenient to the stores and restaurants located in the core area. Varied shopping and dining options are within easy walking distance of this hotel.

Because of this hotel's refusal to accept Canadian currency, we cannot recommend it and we intend to file a formal complaint with Hilton corporate. We will not return to this HGI property.

Was in Portsmouth for business and wanted to try the Hilton Garden Inn rather than staying at the Sheraton. Locations are equal. The hotel has a nice design and seemed to have all the requirements to take care of the guest. Unfortunately Customer Service wasn't one of them and the maid service needs a lot of work.

In short, I found the manager rude to guests and employees, my room was not cleaned that well, and the food in the restaurant was not prepared up to Hilton standards.

I was not impressed. A lot of choice in Portsmouth and for what I got at this hotel it was way over priced. Save your money and stay at the Courtyard.

We just returned from a weekend getaway at the Hilton Garden Inn Portsmouth Downtown. The hotel has just recently been renovated, and it's in excellent condition. When we first checked in, we were greeted by a complementary plate of fresh chocolate chip cookies. Always a great treat after being stuck in a car smelling like old popcorn! The lobby receptionist was very friendly.

First and foremost, I have to say that this hotel does have a great location. I see that a lot of other reviewers have mentioned it, and it's true. The hotel is literally a block from the heart of Portsmouth. There are chain and local shops for you tourists that can't leave your destination without a souvenir, and there are an abundance of cafes ranging from sandwich shops to elegant dining at steakhouses or overlooking the harbor.

We booked a King Suite, which is supposedly the biggest suite in the house. For $219.00 a night, it seemed like a reasonable deal. Although this was during the off-peak season. Generally, rates here can get pretty hefty since Portsmouth is a picturesque, cute-sy town where everything is within walking distance and the harbor is outside your window. Anyway, the suite was in the corner of the building and had a large common room with couches, a flat-screen TV, a bar with a mini-fridge, a closet with extra pillows and space, and a large desk. The bedroom had a King bed, another closet, a comfy chair, and lots of space. The suite can comfortably sleep large families. The couch in the common room can fold out and become a bed and you can call up for a cot. The room was tastefully done, and was very spacious which is always a good thing.

The bathroom in the suite has a bath-glass shower combo. There's lots of counter space and I bet it's possible to fit three or four people on the bathroom floor to sleep (although they may not do it willingly!). Seriously, though - it's big.

The King Suite is the perfect suite for families, and it has great views of a parking garage on one side (something's gotta give!). Besides that one window, the other windows have views of the harbor and also downtown so just don't look out the window on the far right unless you want a great view of the top floor of a nearby parking garage.

Speaking of parking, it's valet at this hotel. It's a convenient service, but they will charge you $8.00 a day. It's 24-hour-service though, so once you pay, you can go in and out of the hotel no problem.

For business travelers, the hotel offers not only complementary high speed internet, but also a business center for guests only. The center is impressive, and has two computers, a copier, a color printer, and a stationary table with all your necessities such as floppy disks, highlighters, staplers, and stationary. The best part is that all of this is all free and for guests only!

The staff at the hotel were all friendly. Our room phone was broken and we called down on the other phone. We were promptly greeted by a handyman who came up and replaced our phone. He was very nice and cordial.

The hotel has a fully equipped exercise room, with ellipticals, treadmills, bikes, and weights. There's also a 5-foot-deep swimming pool and a jacuzzi. On that same floor, there's a laundry room but remember to bring your quarters!

The only complaint I really have about this hotel is that breakfast isn't free. You could always say that I'm spoiled by the complementary breakfast buffets at Hampton Inns, though. The hotel has its own restaurant, called "The Great American Grill," and it offers a breakfast buffet every morning. It has all the good stuff. The chef will make you omelettes, pancakes, or french toast to order and there are other pastries and hot breakfast items. On weekdays, the charge is $9.95 per person and on weekends it's $12.95 per person. Sundays is brunch day, and there is live jazz from 10am to 1pm. It's pricey, but it's still great food and good service. The restaurant also offers a lunch and dinner menu, and room service.

Overall, this hotel is great. It caters to your needs, whether you're the avid business traveler who needs their laptop or the busy parents with kids who are just looking for a relaxing and stress-free getaway. Whatever you need, it won't be overlooked.

Hotel is in an awesome location... right around the corner from several breweries and restaurants... 2 blocks from downtown portsmouth. The lobby looks new with HD televisions.. business center is awesome.. has free internet, printing, and copying capabilities.. i loved it! The room was great... only downside was the television... I thought I remembered reading that all rooms has a flat tv.... not the case. Breakfast was awesome... nice enviornment and quality of food was excellent. I would venture out for lunch/dinner though as there are plenty of great options!

We stayed at this hotel with another couple. Our room was fine, theirs had a toilet that wouldn't flush and a cold shower. At breakfast the next morning, the staff ignored us. This has never happened at the Sheraton. I don't get it. At checkout, the front desk people didn't ask how our room was and usually that only happens when they've been getting a lot of complaints.

The rooms were new, quiet, and clean, but they've really got some problems that need to be fixed. I'll eventually go back and try the Hilton again, but for the rest of 2007 I'll stay at the Sheraton instead.
