The Hilton Garden Inn in downtown Portsmouth was a pleasure from the minute we drove up. The valet was helpful and friendly. The front desk staff were exceptional. Our room was bright and clean. After we checked out, the valet brought the car around so we could load our bags, then they kept the car in their parking lot until we were ready to leave. They let us use the hotel facilities right up until we left Portsmouth. This hotel is a winner!!!

We stayed here overnight on a Friday, as a stopover on a longer trip. We booked earlier in the day and found a great deal online. I was a bit surprised to find that they didn"t offer free parking. The $15 valet parking is your best bet, although there is a city parking garage across the street from the hotel. The valet guys were prompt and courteous. The hotel room was large and comfortable. The bed was very comfortable. There is an office desk that is roomy and would be great for business work. The best thing about this hotel is the location. It is situated in the heart of the city within a couple blocks from multiple restaurants, shops, and bakeries. I can't comment on the other amenities in the hotel since our stay was short. There appeared to be a restaurant/lounge area, but we did not see anyone there for dinner or breakfast the next morning.

Well located in the heart of old Portsmouth with restaurants shops cafes and bars steps away. An attractive sophisticated lobby - more upscale than other HGIs I have been to recently - reminded me of the Intercontinental in San Francisco.
We stayed in two rooms due to my booking snafu - an evolution sofabed room is apparently not the same as the evolution suite with sofabed. Both rooms had modern stylish furnishings, granite bathrooms, comfortable beds and microwave, mini-fridge etc. The suite added a large wraparound living room with rooftop views of churches and old buildings -- the view was almost like being in an old city in France.
The highlight of our trip was Saturday night. After a large seafood lunch we were planning to head out for a slice of pizza. We passed through the lobby where Sharon Jones and keyboard player (Jim Buck?) were entertaining with a mix of 60s-70s rock and pop, a little blues and standards. Tremendous and they took requests. So we stayed in, ordered two glasses of wine and had the hotel's excellent flatbread pizza.. Breakfast the next morning was good with waffles made to order and blueberry pancakes in the warmer, Real maple syrup (after all it is NH).
I am really puzzled why this hotel could not b e a full-on Hilton, iti is nicer than the last two Hiltons in which I have stayed and is in a downtown hip location.
Highly recommended,

Stayed at this HGI with my wife while returning to Maine from a trip to Massachusetts. Check-in was very nice and the clerks were exceptionally welcoming and friendly. Room on the 5th floor had a nice view of the river and surrounding area and was very comfortable and had the usual HGI amenities. Hotel lobby is very large and welcoming and there is bar and restaurant area. Hotel location is in the midst of Portsmouth -- a very brief and very enjoyable walk takes you to the main business and restaurant area. One caution is parking. If only staying overnight, on-street parking is available across from hotel (from 7:00pm tp 9:00am)... but, be careful of the parking 'meter maids' as they begin chalking cars quite early after 9:00am ( so take care to feed the meters ).

Room Tip: 5th floor rooms facing river have a nice view

For many years we have always stayed at The Port Inn when visiting Portsmouth. Without having any bad experiences at The Port Inn, we decided to try the Hilton Garden Inn. We were delighted with the room, the service, and the proximity to everything downtown. We will definitely stay here again.

Haven't stayed here before, and was going to stay at a nearby budget hotel while passing through on business. Called ahead, and found out they were offering a great rate. Knew the location, which can't be beat if you're looking for an evening in Portsmouth - you can walk everywhere. Really nice hotel and accomodations. Nice bar. Restaurant on site, but didn't eat there and there's no free continental breakfast. No problem, we walked into town and got great coffee and pastries for breakfast - better than the usual hotel food anyway. Parking is limited - we only saw their valet service, which parked our car in a lot parking area about 50 feet from the hotel front door (I think I could have handled that.....), but that's a minor thing.

One more relatively minor thing, which is turning into a pet peeve of mine. A relatively new hotel (5 years old) - no bathroom fan? I can live without it, but it makes showers in the morning (and other visits) a lot more pleasant. I can't see why hotel rooms don't all have them.....

All in all, a great place, great room, we got a good rate, and we will definitely stay here again, whether business or pleasure. If you're visiting Portsmouth (and you should!), this is a great place to stay.
