“Perfect place for a romantic dinner.”
Reviewed October 30, 2007

Have a drink in the bar first before dinner. It's the perfect atmosphere! The food and service are both superb. Highly recommend to anyone.

“Great Steakhouse”
Reviewed October 20, 2007

I dined at the Library on October 19th to celebrate a special occasion. The atmosphere is cozy and the service was pleasant.- our server Leslie was very attentive, and the hostess/ manager stopped by our table as well to check in. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meals (the filet mignon and braised lamb special were delicious, as were our starters and the mac and cheese side). We would highly recommend this place to celebrate a special occassion. The prices are in line with other steak houses we have been to- pricey, but worth it!

“what a dinner”
Reviewed February 16, 2007

5 of us had the most relaxed 3 hour dinner we had in a long time. The timing was our choice entirely due to the restful ambiance. Beautiful decor, elegant dining and a great wine list combined to make a simple dinner an event.
Yes expensive, but nobody ever accused Friendly's of having a sensuous Creme Brulee. Meat was crisp on the outside, with the inside just as ordered. The sauces were fresh and tasty, esp the Madera-Gorgonzola. The 'Wedge' of lettuce looked and tasted great. The rack of lamb was arranged like a tepee on the plate, just inviting fingers to grab and eat it.
The wine list is extensive with a good choice of both $7 per glass and $25 bottles of wine. For those who need it, there is also a great selection of the over $70 bottles!
For $46 per person, we had fun, got full and left with our palates satiated. We will return

““Elegance” In Portsmouth Thy Name Is “Library””
Reviewed January 10, 2005

I first met my future in-laws when they came to visit their daughter on “Parent’s Weekend” of her freshman year. Very elegant and refined people, who would never mix the china or silver used for breakfast with that used for mid day meals, and of course the same would be said for the china and silver services for the evening and holiday (specific) dining situations. They asked that I make reservations at a “nice” place for our first dining together experience. If this request had been based in Portsmouth the Library would have been the perfect solution. This is the place you choose when you want a “proper” and formal dining experience. Service is reserved and formal, but friendly enough, with the staff responding to the mood set by the diners. The food is nicely done, the variety a bit limited, but what is presented allows one to feel as if they truly are the center of the Library’s Universe, more correctly, the patron is brought to believe that during their time there, the Library exists for the (specific) patron.
You can order something as simple as a cheeseburger and know that you will have an experience that rivals that of your dining partner who ordered one of the very special fish entrees. At the Library the atmosphere and service are very much a part of the experience, elegant/formal/focused on the diner; while the food compliments the atmosphere and service. This is where you go when you want to impress the spouse of your boss, or to allow your children to appreciate that a dining experience has tradition that can enhance rather than stifle.
