This was our second visit, and we're glad we chose to return. We ate early (5pm) to beat the Valentine's Day crowd, and so were able to choose a table upstairs away from the kitchen doors. My husband had a nice cold Lagunitas IPA and my Merman margarita was strong but tasty. Service was fine, perhaps a tad slow, but the laid-back atmosphere doesnt't lend itself to rushing.

Food: chips & salsa were fresh and yummy for a little nibble before the meal. I ordered scallops in the maple bourbon sauce with grilled banana and sweet potato fries with papaya ketchup. Husband ordered salmon in chipotle glaze with the banana and island rice. We agreed that the meals were cooked to perfection -- scallops melted in the mouth, salmon tender. Sides were excellent and full of flavor. Nothing was overspiced, the meals were balanced and portions were good.

Prices are typical of Portsmouth, and for unique food we find it reasonable. Altogether, a perfectly lovely experience.

I would recommend this spot in the winter- it's so cozy and warm! We came here for a mini vacation- just one night away from Boston. We stopped in and had delicious and reasonably priced food and wine. I can't recall what we ordered, but it was seasonal, very New Englandy and so great. The service is kind and attentive... will definitely return.

We just rediscovered the Blue Mermaid and had a very good dinner. Always better when one of our sons treats, which was the case this time!

The Blue Mermaid used to be the prominent building at the top of "The Hill" in Portsmouth... and it still is, it is just that it has been surrounded by a number of ugly, cookie cutter four story buildings that block it from view. So, it is "hidden", but well worth finding.

Located outside of the bustling downtown Market Street and Congress Street area, it is west of the municipal parking garage, behind the Hilton Garden Inn in an antique clapboard building, part of the historic "The Hill". And while you can park and walk from the garage, The Blue Mermaid has its own lot where you can park for free, a rarity in Portsmouth.

We had the Lobster Quesadilla and Vegetable Spring Rolls for apps and they were excellent with homemade salsa and a spicy peanut sauce for the spring rolls. I really wanted to try the Sweet Potato Coconut Curry soup, but will have that next time... and there will be a next time soon. For main courses we shared the Chicken Pad Thai and the Seafood Tagine. Both excellent and both gluten free. There were a number of vegetarian and gluten free options on the menu and the kitchen is very willing to make changes based on request.

There is a nice small bar downstairs and several spaces that could be used for private parties.

Search out The Blue Mermaid and give it a try, it could become your new favorite Portsmouth restaurant!

Saturday night the place was jumping at our first visit to this welcoming restaurant serving a variety of interests: local music and a chatty bar downstairs and a simple, spacious upstairs dining room. The menu is flagged with guides to today's modern concerns - particularly vegan and gluten-free menu choices. From $6 small plates to $25 entrees, the variety of offerings meet many tastes. Can't go wrong, here!

We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn (right next door) and decided to try something different for lunch. Great decision. This is more like a hole in the wall than your average chain restaurant. Their menu has a Caribbean flair that does not disappoint! Try it- you'll be a repeat customer after one visit!
