The most amazing breakfast food with a great eclectic atmosphere... Coconut chocolate chip Pancakes! OMG, they were so delicious! huge portions and creative delicious dishes. If you're ever in Portsmouth NH you owe it to yourself to go here and enjoy their fare. Real butter and real maple syrup!

“Nostalgic Restaurant”
Reviewed July 12, 2013

We had heard from friends that this was a good place to eat. We went as a rather large party, 6 adults 2 children, but were accommodated within about 20 minutes. It was a very warm day and the restaurant was equally warm. Not much air circulating which made it somewhat uncomfortable. I am sure this place is known for the nostalgic environment with many items from days long past. The food was average and although the breads looked great, the cinnamon raisin bread looked great and I considered taking some home, but after tasting, there was not much flavor and the cinnamon was gooey and runny. Overall the atmosphere was interesting but the food was average. We were here for breakfast so maybe a different meal would fare better.

“Made from Scratch!!! Done Right!!!”
Reviewed July 12, 2013

I love eggs benedict--especially when the hollandaise sauce is made from scratch! The Friendly Toast did it right! The sauce was soft, fluffy and had the perfect hint of Lemon! The prices were reasonable and the vintage style decor was fantastically eclectic.

My only complaint was that the wait staff--although friendly, courteous and knowledgeable moved at a snails pace. A cool, laid back atmosphere is great but--they really just need a bit more "sense of urgency" or "willingness to want to work"

I will still be back to try it out again, because maybe it was just an off day for the staff. As for the food it was fantastic and possibly the best best benny I've ever had!

“Disappointed”
Reviewed July 11, 2013 via mobile

If only the food was good as the unique and appealing ambiance. 5 people ate and nobody was pleased with their meal. The server was friendly and helpful but two recommendations and the special of the day were big misses. We ate breakfast and dinner entrees.

“First impressions don't last long”
Reviewed July 10, 2013 via mobile

When you walk into The Friendly Toast, you are immediately transformed into a neat nostalgic framework, what with all the antiques of by gone decades adorning the walls, cool lamps hanging from ceilings, and the 50's table decor. The "please seat yourself and take menus" sign gives one a carefree impression, which is also cool. And then there's the menu so chock full of interesting options that it feels difficult to make a choice. The server is helpful (immediately bringing water to the table), offering more information of those items of interest. We follow the server's advice, and then things start to go downhill.....

The ordered meals come out quickly enough, and first bites are tasty. I ordered the Georgia Reuben sandwich, with sweet potato fries. I love spicy food, and can tolerate it well, but this sandwich was WAY too spicy, so much so that it detracted from all of the good tastes. My spouse had Eggs Benedict served with home fries, which were also spicy, just not nearly as hot as the Reuben. She liked the eggs preparation, however. So, we needed more water because our tongues and throats were a bit agitated, but there was no server to be found. They were all huddled together near the kitchen talking to one another for about 5 minutes. Bad news.

When we completed lunch, I started looking around and noticed how dirty the floor was from various dropped small food pieces of previous diners. The servers hadn't bothered to sweep the floors on a regular basis. It was kind of gross, especially when the next group of diners were seated. Yuck! Then I visited the restroom only to find it in mild disarray as well.

I quickly paid the bill of $33 (tax/tip included) and we left knowing that besides cool appearances and a diverse interesting menu, we won't be back.
