“Home Style French Cooking”
Reviewed October 11, 2012

We were on a weekend visit to Portsmouth. We like French food and were happy to find Cafe Mirabelle near our hotel. We had to accept an early reservation, as the restaurant was fully booked after 5:30pm on a Saturday. The wait staff consisted of very friendly, local women. The main courses were very like home style French food....delicious but not made with upscale ingredients. The desserts were of excellent quality and quantity. On the other hand, the wine list is very limited and not very French. As another reviewer noted, the quality of the bread and olive oil could be improved. Overall, very good value for the money.

“A Little Bit of Paris in Portsmouth”
Reviewed August 13, 2012

We have been dining at Cafe Mirabelle for about 20 years - our favorite stop en route to Maine. The menu is always compelling and the owners are almost always in the dining room ensuring their customers are happy.
We recommend the Coquille St. Jacques served on a shell and also the pork loin. Both were accompanied by perfectly roasted vegetables and a wedge of fabulous herbed potato pancake pie - comfort food with a French accent.
The salads were fresh and delicious and the creme brulee and white chocolate mousse desserts were heavenly. We'll be back next year...and the next.

“Eat elsewhere”
Reviewed July 20, 2012

The place is pretty. But the food is just not good. Quality ingredients are missing. The bread, even though it was toasted, was poor quality. The olive oil wasn't high quality either. The duck was only six slices. The sides were overcooked. The service was not up to par.

“Delightful Dinner”
Reviewed July 15, 2012

We had a wonderful meal and service here on our visit to Portsmouth. I always find it hard to figure out where to eat in a tourist area as there are always so many mediocre and overpriced options. That being said this is not one of them at all. It is a shinning star both in food quality, presentation and waitstaff.

We ate upstairs which was cute and comfortable. There is a parking lot right across from the restaurant and it is a easy walk from downtown. The menu pricing was very reasonable.

We started with the spinach salad which was divine and a wonderful bread basket. We then had the duck and steak au poivre for our main entrees, To finish off a great meal we had the creme brulee which is some of the best we have ever had.

“Charming”
Reviewed July 11, 2012

The restaurant is within easy walking distance of the heart of Portsmouth (5 minutes from the Hilton). It appears to be in a large former home, with a downstairs room with tables in interesting nooks and crannies, and an upstairs room with lovely beams etc. The food indeed was country french fare, well prepared with interesting flavors. Definitely a nice change from typical seacoast food.
