Description: Located just two blocks down from Market Square in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Jumpin' Jay's is a local foodie enclave serving refined seafood in a sleek restaurant setting. The quality of fare is unsurpassed, with fish arriving daily from local fisherman as well as some exotic catches from locations such as New Zealand and Ecuador. Four to six varieties of fish appear on the ever-changing "Catch of the Day" menu, complimented by your choice of gourmet sauce. Our raw bar offers an extensive variety of shellfish found in New Hampshire. Our specialties menu offers more traditional flavor, including Maine Crab Cakes, Haddock Piccata and our popular Linguine in White Clam Sauce. The atmosphere is casually hip, with no pretense. Reservations encouraged. Open seven nights a week.

“Good, but I've had better meals there”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

I have been to Jumpin' Jays a few times and always liked it and have recommended it. This time it was good, but not as good as past times. I had the seafood green curry. The taste was very good but the color of the curry made it difficult to recognize what I was eating - a scallop? piece of fish?
The lighting is very low, so try to sit by a window. The server was very knowledgeable and quite pleasant. The food arrived in a reasonable amount of time.
My biggest complaint is the glass of wine - very small amount for $9.

“The best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2013

The haddock piccata might be the best seafood dish I have had anywhere. The whole menu is a delight and they are friendly and accommodating. Portsmouth's finest; dine there as much as possible, and that is saying a lot in a restaurant-rich town..

Jumpin Jay's has awesome food, a great atmosphere, and an idela location right in the heart of town. It's relaxed but still feels like a nice night out. Definitely recommend!

“Fish done right”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2013 via mobile

Very fresh products make for fine dining in the proper hands. This is the case here. The various fish are prepared just right with a choic of several sauces. The swordfish and haddock could not have been better. If only Jay had lighting that would allow a diner to see what was on their plates it would have been a lot better.

“Quality fish cooked well!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2013

It only goes to show that you do not need to mess with good fish to get things right. The restaurant was really busy and we were glad that we had booked ahead. Whilst it was not cheap the food was well priced for the amount and quality you got. The Atlantic halibut and local monkfish were both excellent and the option of sauces on the side were well chosen, not that the fish needed it! Wine seemed pricy so we opted for local beer which worked well with the meal.
Well done!
