“The best chowder ever!”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

What a hidden dragon! We were drawn in by the sign on the door for $4.99 lobster rolls. We had the Lobster Roll and it was delish. Not too much mayo on a piece of soft texas toast size buttered bread and it was filled with lobster. We were about to leave and we saw a sign about the best chowder. So we ordered a bowl. It was like a meal in itself. It was heaping with seafood with the white broth. Ive been to New Englands chowder fest and this was definately in the top two. The bartender Mike was super friendly in the typical saloon setting. Not a fancy schmancy place at all but well worth it. I had to take some chowder home it was way too much but im looking forward to eating it later.

“Not a big fan”
Reviewed April 13, 2013

Some of the locals love this place, but I had a bad experience. I went in for lunch with a friend and sat at the bar. The bartender looked at us, but she stayed at one side of the bar talking with guests who knew her and seemed to ignore us. After about twenty minutes, I waved to her and asked for some help. She said that she would be over in a minute. Ten minutes later, she came over.

We each got a beer and asked for a menu. She brought our beer, but forgot the menu and went back to her friends. We called over and asked again, and she seemed annoyed. We heard her huff and puff as she walked back over to us with the menu.

We tried to get her attention for another twenty minutes to place our food order. Once again, she seemed annoyed when she finally acknowledged us.

The food didn't take long to arrive, but some of it fell off of the plate as she walked toward us. Not a huge deal, but careless behavior.

After we finished, it took another fifteen minutes to get her attention to get the bill. I was tempted to deny her a tip, but I decided to give her 20% anyway, although she didn't deserve the tip.

If you're not a regular customer or a local, you may have a similar experience and be treated as though you are not welcome.

“'Dining Room' a nice addition”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

Tried the new 'Dining Room' last night for an early dinner. Fairly sparse decor but tables are nicely spaced with tablecloths and a good view to State Street. Service was top-notch and food was great -- and very reasonable. Marinated turkey tips with baked potato and peas was a tasty meal and filling -- and only $11.99. My husband had the spaghetti and meatballs -- tasty meatballs and well-cooked pasta all for $8.99. If you're looking for an alternative to State Street Saloon's more bar-like dining, give this a try. Highly recommended, even in a foodie town like Portsmouth.

“Awesome Seafood Chowder”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

4 of us went to State Street Saloon for lunch. The lunch specials are unbelievably low priced. Lobster roll with chips and pickle for 4.99. Good amount of lobster for the money but personally I would upgrade to the larger size roll for 11.99. That said, add a cup of Seafood chowder for 2.50 and what a bargain!. This was by far the best seafood chowder we had ever had, not a heavy base and it was chock full of seafood, scallops, lobster, fish. Yummy! I had the lobster mac and cheese for 6.99. I thought it would be a small serving but it was large enough for me to take home half of it. It was not a heavy cheddar sauce but it could have has a little more in terms of spices. The was very little lobster .

The service was good, not rushed . We ate in the dining room which was empty.

One negative was the unisex rest room. It was really quite unpleasant, dingy and dirty .

“It used to be good (many many years ago)”
Reviewed December 23, 2012

The food sucks, it has for the last few years, Bartenders are constantly looking for their tip. A classic dive with no atmosphere. If you are lucky you will go when the princess and prince aren't working!! :)
