We took the stop over tour and had a great time. The trip was informative and fun. The crew was helpful and the narrator of the tour was informative. When we were on the island our guide was John, who was very good too. The only thing we would have done different would be to bring our own lunch. We paid $15 for a sandwich and salad on the island. Neither was very good.

We had perfect weather for our 'walkabout' cruise to the Isles of Shoals. The tour left on time and the narrator was very informative. Unfortunately, we could not hear everything but heard much of the history and interesting facts about the navy yard, harbor going out. The waters in the inner harbor are treacheous and the currents visible but as we got further out in the ocean, it became calm and we could see for miles. The history of all the islands was fascinating - there was so much to learn about. Once we arrived, there was a short history tour of the rock houses and surroundings. We did not have much time to explore on our own with this tour - would have liked to have been able to check out the area and buildings more. The beauty of the ocean and surrounding islands are truly beautiful. The trip back was also informative, the narrator continued to offer tidbits and points of interest. The snack bar was too pricey so did not buy anything there. We had brought some water and some fruit so nibbled on that. The bathrooms were plentiful and clean. The seating was ample and plenty of choices depending on one's preference. Overall we had a very enjoyable time and they did a great job. The only regret is that we wished we had more time on the island. Good adventure for a hot summer day with the cooling ocean and winds.

Though I live in the Seacoast Region of New Hampshire and have visited the shore many times, I must admit I have always been curious about the Isles of Shoals-which are 6 miles off the coast and just visible from land.

To satisfy that curiosity, my husband, daughter (19 years old) and I made it one of our 'stay-cation' adventures to catch the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company boat in Portsmouth, and take the longer stay (there are 2 options- a stay of about an hour, or a stay of about 4 hours) to Star Island.

The weather was fine, and the trip was narrated, with the guide pointing out important historical features along the way. There was also a guided tour of Star Island, which was interesting as well. The islands themselves are very small and barren, rich in history though they be. One could rent a rowboat to get to a few of the closer islands, though we opted not to.

The conference center on Star Island serves lunch to day-trippers if they call ahead and reserve, but we had decided to pack a small lunch. We grabbed coffee/tea at the snack bar.

All in all, it was a pleasant day-trip- a low-key thing to do on a summer day.

My wife and I decided to take the 3 hour cruise out to Star Island and back. It was a beautiful day and the water was extremely calm. Nice ride out and the narrator was very informative about the history of the the harbor as well as the islands. We sat on the top deck and enjoyed the light breeze as we made our way out to the small group of islands knows as the Shoals. We passed several lighthouses and old Forts along the river banks and even saw the majestic old fortress style building used by the Navy as a prison! Nice ride, reasonable price ($27) and easy parking in the yard for $5. American Express is not accepted.
