“Really fun!”
Reviewed July 13, 2011

We were in Portsmouth for our anniversary in April. It was a little cold and rainy, so we were looking for an indoor activity for the afternoon. We found coupons for free brewery tours in the Portsmouth Travel Guide at the front desk of our hotel. The Red Hook Brewery was so much fun! Easy to get to and lots of parking. We had lunch in the restaurant then went on the brewery tour. The restaurant was so open and airy. High ceilings with exposed beams and rafters-it looked so cool in there. There was a really cool fireplace area with big comfy leather couches & chairs. The food was great - basic sandwiches & fries. The brewery tour is very informative and really comprehensive. The tour operator was so knowledgable and well-spoken. Who knew there was so much to learn about beer? Free samples at the end of the tour. I think the tour took over an hour or so. Great activity for a rainy afternoon!

“Beer tasting not really a tour”
Reviewed July 3, 2011

Minimal tour and history, packaging line was down so tour was even shorter, but the beer tasting was long and bottomless pitchers.

“Average Brewery Tour”

One dollar admission price. Tour about one hour. Walked around the Facility, informed about the brew making process. Tasted beer . Got to keep small glass after tour.

“Good Beer, But Not a Very Exciting Tour”
Reviewed May 2, 2010

I recently brought a tour group to Red Hook Brewery in Portsmouth. We had just come from a very professional and friendly tour of the Budweiser Brewery in Merrimac, NH, about an hour away and my group was enthusiastic and interested.

After paying our $3 per person (right, tour groups pay more than the general public), we were rushed through the factory without much explanation and within about ten minutes we were brought to the tasting room where there was no seating and few comforts. Several who were using the rest rooms missed the tour. We were allowed four small tastes in souvenir glasses. The beer was great and far superior to Budweiser's brew, but the guide was boorish and unprofessional and more than once raised his voice at people who dared to talk while he was speaking. It seemed to me that the sole purpose of the tour was to get attendees into the bar/restaurant downstairs in a matter of twenty minutes. I don't recommend this tour for groups.

It was interesting to be able to compare the Budweiser tour with the Red Hook tour. I'd give the folks at Bud five stars in comparison. The Budweiser tour was free with an extensive walking tour of brewery, two full size glasses of the beers or your choice, snacks, and a tour of the Clydesdale stables. The samples were served in a pub complete with leather sofas and working fireplace. The professional guide was friendly, solicitous, informative, and good at her job. Red Hook could learn a lot about tours from Budweiser.

“Excellent beer, and a great restaurant too!”
Reviewed October 28, 2009

Having visited the Red Hook Brewery in Washington state last year, we were anxious to return to the other location in New England.

They offer a beer sampler which allowed us to try all the different varieties including their seasonal beers, and we're glad we did! Lots of great options.

The restaurant was popular and with good reason, the food was excellent, with lots of vegetarian options, too! If EVER in the area again, we'll be back!
