“Most of the shops are only open during regular business hours, so if you are interested in shopping, plan accordingly”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

We liked downtown Portsmouth and the Market Square area very much! We were staying at the Sheraton, so it was just a short walk away. We headed down there on Wed evening after we arrived and knocked around a bit, shopped a bit, and ended up having a lovely dinner at the River House out on the deck with a stunning view!

Next morning, we did another walk about Market Square and my wife found a great pair of shoes and a great sweater to buy.

Well worth a few hours walk about. Most of the shops are only open during regular business hours, so if you are interested in shopping, plan accordingly.

“High ratio of tourists to locals”
Reviewed October 3, 2013

Most memorable was the small band the wandered the streets and the dock playing upbeat music for donations to the food shelf and shelter. Very large selection of breweries and restaurants to choose from and walking around provided lots of interesting shops. Down side is it is almost impossible to find a parking space and when you do it is $1 per hour and limited time. Portsmouth needs to work on this to provide more parking. good news is that several hotels are newly built within a short walk of downtown.

“This is the reason we will go back!”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

We stopped in Portsmouth on our way out of a weeklong vacation in Maine. Our flight went out of Manchester and Portsmouth seemed to be a good overnight stop for us. We arrived in the late afternoon and decided to go downtown to check out the town. What a lovely surprise! Had a fabulous meal and made plans to go back the next day before our flight took off.

We were very impressed by the people that live/frequent there. Great lifestyle (lots of exercising, eating healthy, loving their pets), great ambiance in the town, beautiful sites. We are already making plans for another vacation starting in Portsmouth and then heading south.
