“Charming”
Reviewed October 17, 2012

The name is deceiving. Most of the interesting "stuff" is not on the square, but an interesting and charming area. Shops are not the norm. Good restaurants. Good people watching. Good variety --something for everyone.

“Be sure to stroll around here.”
Reviewed October 14, 2012

A great collection of old buildings, and vibrant commerce. Good eats, too! I liked the Irish store, and had fun visiting some of the other places. The Friendly Toast is a super place to eat. The small visitor centre kiosk is helpful.

“Interesting Area”
Reviewed October 11, 2012

Regardless of the name, it is not a town square or a market area but more of a center of the town intersection of streets which have a curious tendency to sport a variety of names as one travels along their length.

There is the ubiquitous New England large church, a number or restaurants, public buildings, a small museum and small shops, but no "market area or square" as I understand the words.

Nearby, if you park on the second level, is a public parking garage which gives easy walking access to the locally called "Market Square" and the numerous shops and restaurants located near this "Market Square" intersection area.

“Barely a chain store in sight!”
Reviewed October 8, 2012

Lots of small shops and boutiques: clothing, arts and crafts (esp. the glass shop at the corner of Market and Bow Streets), fun kitsch stuff at Macro Polo (Market Street) and The Manporium (Congress Street) is great.

“A nice place to be outdoors”
Reviewed October 2, 2012

Market Square is in the central of downtown Portsmouth, and is full of shops and restaurants. Both in Market Square and adjoining Market Street, there are lots of great shops in which to browse, along with little restaurants (plenty of outdoor seating in the warmer months), and coffee shops. Market Square is a nice place to walk around on a good day, but really only if you're interested in shopping or people watching.
