Owner description: Sail aboard the Piscataqua, a traditional reproduction of the flat-bottom gundalow barges that were once prevalent along local waterways. Educational, informative and fun, a sail is a great way to explore the sights and sounds of the Piscataqua River. Morning, afternoon, and sunset sails run Memorial Day through Columbus Day, and we offer weekly specialty sails featuring music, guest speakers, local tastings, and more. Private charters are also available.

What a lovely way to experience the Portsmouth Harbor & the Piscatqua River as it makes it way to the ocean! The day could have not been better... A strong wind, a clear sky . . .and wonderful views from everywhere. Captain Glenn was engaging and knowledgeable, as were the others( crew &volunteers). We had the experience of seeing a large tanker( The Asphalt Eagle) get towed by two tug boats as it made its way up the Piscataqua . . . Talk about parallel worlds . . One nautical ship for hauling from the late 1800's juxtaposed with a modern tanker.... Amazing...
Definitely a thumbs up for an experience while visiting Portsmouth!

We took the sunset cruise on the Piscataqua (name of the river as well as the boat). The guides were friendly and knowledgeable and talked about the history of the Gundalows. We also helped raise the sail and catch planktons. Guests can bring food and beverages on board which makes it a different experience. Overall, a good experience.

After spending the day at Strawberry Banke Museum, we walked over to Prescott Park to take a two-hour sunset cruise down the Piscataqua River on the gundalow, Piscataqua, thinking it would be a fun way to see a little bit more of Portsmouth. It turned out to be a such an enjoyable evening. You can bring a picnic, some wine, etc. aboard and just sit and enjoy the ride. But it’s fun for kids, too. We had two 6- year old girls with us and they had a great time helping hoist the sails. The workers kept them very entertained: they collected river water and looked at it under microscopes to identify the different types of plankton, and then went below deck and received a hands-on lesson on nautical maps, so it was a great educational experience for them. We all learned some history about the area and about gundalows, and saw a little bit more of Portsmouth like we wanted. The employees (and volunteers) were all helpful and answered any questions we had. It was a great experience overall. We did have a bit of trouble finding the boat (had to ask several people where it was docked) and our cruise left about 20 minutes late, getting us back to the park a little bit later than we expected.

A couple of things to know before you go:
- Check for online deals (Groupon!!)
- This is the only sailing Gundalow in the world = pretty cool
- Sunset tours from 6-8pm in the summer are BEAUTIFUL
- The Gundalow is NOT licensed to go into the ocean, just sail around Portsmouth harbor/bay area, which is kind of a bummer
- Tour guides are friendly & informative
- Our tour left 20 minutes late...
- Line up 20-30 minutes early to actually get a seat along the side of the Gundalow; they claim there are seats for 30 passengers, but some people looked mighty uncomfortable on their perches
- It's BYOB, and since the boat is very stable, bringing a bottle of wine and a couple of glasses, or some beer or whatever you prefer, is totally doable. Not really much space to spread out a cheese & crackers type experience, but a bag of munchies would work just fine.
