We received a recommendation from a local we met on a harbor cruise, so we decided to try The District. When we looked at the menu outside, we also saw that they had gluten free meals on the menu, which was a relief. It was still light out, but just in the cusp of being too cold to eat outside, so we chose to eat inside. The atmosphere on a weeknight leaves something to be desired because it was pretty empty. The decor was fine and the music and lighting were appropriate. We ordered the poutinne appetizer, which was delicious. For dinner, I had the munkfish special and my husband had the chicken breast. We ended up sharing quite a bit because they were both quite tasty. I recommend ordering a "sidecar" starch or vegetable to split though, because the sides listed with the meal are more of a garnish. The prices were reasonable for a nice restaurant in a vacation/tourist town and our server was friendly and attentive without being annoying. If you're looking for a better atmosphere, I suggest going on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night.

My husband & I flew into Logan airport on a late flight. By the time we got to Portsmouth and checked into our hotel it was after 10 pm. The hotel clerk was wonderful and gave us the name of several restaurants that should be open. However all but one had closed and the last one was not serving any food, only their bar was open. Their staff told us to go the The District .It was a fantastic meal in a great locale. It seems to be open late every evening .i was afraid that everything would be tasteless and overcooked because of the time but their chef had some great specials which were cooked fresh and to perfection. Drop in here if you are in Portsmouth.

Food is good, prices are right. service excellent. Sitting outside on a beautiful day can be challenging. Loud cars and motorcycles make it impossible to hear anything.

Arrived late in town and this was one of the few restaurants open. Turned out to be a great meal with a varied menu. Best hamburger I have tasted in years. Service was excellent.

Chicken and Belgium Waffle? Terrific choice. Beet Caprese would be worth a drive back to Portsmouth.
