Four of us went for lunch today. Because it was snowing and there were several local Christmas celebrations planned later in the day, the place was fairly empty. Which is not always the case. We were quickly seated right in front of a window overlooking the water. The server was very attentive, giving us the specials and then patient that we were all dithering about our choices. Drinks: I had water, hard to screw up but is has happened. Husband, iced tea. Brother-in-law had a tequila sunrise that looked like tequila and grenadine, very little orange juice. Sister, a Bloody Mary which was on the menu as "Mary and the Boys". A humongous concoction of citron vodka, spiced tomato juice, 2 types of olives, 2 really giant shrimp and a celery salt, pepper rim with lemons....skip the appetizer, have this!

For appetizers, we were all very happy with out choices. Sister and husband, had the very, very good clam chowder. Excellent, but not the very classic New England stuff. There were cubes of carrots and a hint of sherry, but yum, yum, yum, just try it. I had the fried calamari, very light slightly spicy, perfect. Brother-in-law had shrimp cocktail....again, hard to screw up. But he did comment that his shrimp were a bit smaller than what came on the Bloody Mary! True.

Entrees: Sister followed her bowl of chowder with the fried tomato and bacon salad. It looked amazing, and they did not skimp on the bacon for sure! Husband had a fried oyster sandwich with a side of coleslaw which he said was wonderful but would have been better without the bun. He said the oysters were so delicate that the bun kind of overwhelmed them. He would have been happier with just the fried oysters. Brother-in-law and I both orders the fish tacos. I had the California fish tacos which were more like a burrito served with taco chips, he ordered Surf tacos that were like soft tacos served with rice. Both had bits of fried fish, cabbage and guacamole. I think he liked his, as he it the all. Mine were Good, but I have had better, much better.

We ate at the sushi bar side of the restaurant (which is adjacent to but separate from the main restaurant). The food was excellent, but somewhat expensive. Nice views and nicely decorated interior. I would recommend it if you are not on a budget.

The first impression of this restaurant is amazing. There is a water view from all tables of the river.
The food was good but the dessert was amazing. The blueberry cake was the best part of the meal. Service was a little slow and our order was messed up but we'd still return sometime and give them another chance. They don't have their own restroom you have to go down the hall into the office building - seems odd for such an upscale place.

My husband and I recently had the pleasure to dine at Surf in Portsmouth, NH. We were greeted warmly as we entered and escorted to our table. The ambiance and decor are very nice and the view is terrific. Even in the dark of night, the lights sparkle off the water and we saw one of the tugs returning to the dock. Our server was Erin and she promptly took our drink and appetizer order. Husband had the clam chowder and we split the scallops on grilled ciabatta. The chowder was light (not too creamy) and very flavorful and the scallops were cooked perfectly with beautiful presentation. They were fabulous. We then enjoyed the New England Seafood dinner and the Lazy Man's Lobster. We both loved our entrees. Husband rounded out his meal with a decadent dessert. It was a pumpkin cake with cream cheese and caramel and some "to die for" homemade ice cream. Our dinner from start to finish was one of the best we've enjoyed in the Portsmouth area. Prior to paying our bill, we were greeted by Ian, the manager and graciously invited back. We plan to take him up on his invitation and you should too!
