The menu is inventive but not strange, with really delightful combinations that you'll never be able to do at home (or not want to spend that kind of time in the kitchen.) While not a cheap place, the prices are reasonable for the talent in the kitchen and overall experience.
We were a table of 4, dining with adult friends. While the menu is wide-ranging with meats, fowl, fish, and vegetarian options, we all ordered fish dishes. These were expertly prepared (and I'm picky about well-prepared seafood.) I had the broiled scallops that came with hot-spiced lentils and souffle-like small side that was outstanding. Others had various grilled/broiled fish that they also thought were excellent, with unique accompaniments. You could add sides to share, but we had substantial starters, and the mains have some of the mentioned add-ons, so we did not feel the need. If you just came for mains, or had lighter starters, you probably want to add a side.
We had various starters and salads, which were all very good, but the real star with an assortment of seafood tapas that were very tasty -- I'd easily go back to this place to order this at the bar with drinks. Desserts were also delicious compositions as well as plainer options like ice creams and sorbets, but even those had some unique flavors.
The wine list is wide and well-selected. Most by-the-glass options were $9-12, and a decent-sized pour.
My only gripe is easily corrected: the coffee was not hot. The room also has the potential to get a bit loud when very full, but it seems to quiet down to a better level once the food arrives and everyone starts eating.
The place is in the Strawberry Banke area, across from Prescott Park and an easy walk from the center of Portsmouth. Complimentary on-site parking, but it fills up fast.
So: I would be very happy to go back, and also work my way through the starters with a drink at the bar.
