Room was clean and comfy. Staff was attentive without being overbearing. Breakfast was excellent, but no entree choice, this isn't a problem for me as I like to be surprised with food. The walk to downtown is a little far but workable. The trolley stops right in front but doesn't run late.

Thank you for the thoughtful review. You are correct that we are not in downtown. It is a 10 to 15 minute walk for most, but if you have mobility challenges it is worth keeping in mind. The trolley runs from 8 to 8 (roughly), so won't do late night revelers much good. We don't offer a selection of entrees for breakfast, but we do have the next days menu posted at checkin. So if you have just successfully defended your waffle eating championship and notice waffles on the menu please let us know and we will whip up something else for you.

You will not find a better breakfast in Portsmouth. Having been the head housekeeper for the Martin Hill Inn, I should know. As I leave the Inn, I wanted to say thank you to all the wonderful guests I have met over the last several years, and to wish Russ and Meg only the best.

And,to the incredible Kizmet, I will miss you,and not JUST for your incredible food.

May the Inn continue to be a place where people feel comfortable and well cared for.

Blessed be to all

Kim Carson

This B&B is everything a B&B should be...Warm and attentive hosts, beautiful rooms and a decadent breakfast to start your day. The rooms are filled with lovely antiques and historical charm.
You will not be disappointed.

First time visit to Martin Hill Inn and Portsmouth. The owners were friendly and helpful with suggestions for dinner and activities available in the area. Wish the weather was more cooperative during our short stay to enjoy the nice garden area. The room was comfortable, beautifully decorated, nothing like a generic hotel room. Breakfast was plentiful and flavorful. There were different dining options if one does not want to socialize first thing in the morning. Portsmouth itself was charming. Hope to return next year!

We own and operate a B&B in another part of NH and decided to take a two day getaway before our season kicked in. We spent a lovely time at the Martin Hill Inn - the hosts were friendly and knowledgeable, The accommodations were beautifully appointed and the breakfast was superb. The location was perfect to all the sights Portsmouth has to offer. Being in the business our standards are high and the Martin Hill Inn exceeded all our expectations. We wish them continued success and a great season in 2014.

First time in B&B. Loved its location, deco and style. Hosts Russ and his wife were very friendly, breakfast was great (though my boyfriend found it like plastic). Bed is super comfortable, with complimentary sherry and WIFI.

What we don't like about the room:
1. Bathroom is tiny, shower is too small that you can hardly turn around.
2. Heater gave noises at night.
Thinking about the houses were built in early 19th century, this is understandable.

I personally found the room is a bit pricey but it was definitely worth the experience!! Don't forget to try their big selection of tea!

Room Tip: First floor in the main house is full of flavor of old New England. Room on the second floor of the...

I always tell our guests that nothing says "old building" like steep, narrow stairs, but undersized bathrooms may come in a close second. I'm glad the reviewer is sensitive to the limitations of a 200 year old building in a historic zone. If anyone out there has any clever solutions for knocking the shampoo over with your elbow every time you turn around we would be delighted to entertain them!

This was our second time at the Martin Hill Inn and we loved it even more this time around! Stayed in the noonday suite which is very spacious, clean, and comfortable. The staff is so pleasant and even let us check in a little early. The breakfast was delicious!! You can't beat the price here, and it is quite close to downtown Portsmouth. You could walk, or take your car to shop/eat in the downtown area. If you like B&Bs I don't doubt that you'll enjoy your stay here. We'll be back!
