“Great site for children, adults and history buffs”

This submarine is so much fun to walk around in. A self guided tour makes for a great experience. Take your time inside, press buttons to hear information about certain rooms or things. Kids love this place. FUN FUN FUN, worth a trip for something different!

“Cool History”
Reviewed April 13, 2013

The museum is kind of out of the way, but if you find it you will enjoy what it has to offer.

The entrance fee is minimal, and well worth the experience. Children will have a lot of fun climbing through the submarine and pretending to be the captain.

I would highly recommend taking the time to visit, with or without kids. Really good history with this museum.

“Worth a visit.”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

While in Portsmouth we drove by the USS Albacore and decided to pull in just to take a look. We eventually decided to buy tickets to go inside, more so to support the museum. However I was really glad we went in. It is a self guided tour but along the way there are kiosk where you can hit an audio button and get a little information on the ship or section you are in. We went through and really enjoyed ourselves. Lots of great photo opportunities as well.

“History Condensed”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

Who isn't fascinated by life in a cramped tube deep beneath the sea for days or months at a time? Although the Albacore's mission was more of an experimental prototype for all other submarines, it was an impressive and necessary project for our naval preparedness. From the outside, the Albacore looks like something to take a quick picture of and move on, but the $5 tour is well worth it! The interior of the sub is as complex as the human body with all its tubes and wires and endless gauges and switches and valves and claustrophobic living spaces. There are red buttons to push for a narrated tour, beginning outside the sub at the propeller field and the entrance ramp, continuing throughout all the compartments of the sub, and ending at the exit ramp. The narrations all contain first person anecdotes from men who sailed on the Albacore, which lends a personal touch to the automated tour. There is a small museum inside the main entrance building, as well as a gift shop. The Albacore spurs the imagination and enhances our admiration for those who served aboard her. Who needs yoga, when you are forced to maneuver the tight spaces aboard the vessel? We visited as a time-killer before meeting family for dinner, but it ended up being the highlight of the day! We owe homage to the great history bequeathed to us. A good place to render such homage is the USS Albacore in Portsmouth.

“Fun to do, only takes an hour”

My 9 year old son was sold as soon as we said submarine, but even the 13 year old daughter said "Cool" by the time we left!
