“A great meal in an unexpected place”
Reviewed October 27, 2013

Peterborough, New Hampshire is off the beaten path -- a lovely, iconic New England village miles from the nearest Interstate. But it has a great place to eat in the Bantam Grill. It doesn't sound like it, but Italian is its specialty and it does it very, very well. The brussels sprouts appetizer was light and tasty. The bread was crunchy yet airy. My wife's lamb ragu was excellent: many, big chunks of lamb in a nice red sauce with ribbon pasta done perfectly al dente. My potato gnocchi with mushrooms was also very satisfying, with a couple of different varieties of mushrooms, with bite and texture and a tasty brandy sauce. The staff, from the bartender to the server, were friendly, chatty and knowledgeable. Our only quibble was a fairly short pour on a glass of wine. But the overall quality and ambiance more than made up for it.

“The roasted chicken is awesome!”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

Whenever I go I commit to trying something new but I can't pass up the roasted chicken dinner.
It is sooooo good. The waitresses are great and the atmosphere so inviting you forget you are in a strip mall! The owners of the Bantam also own the Pearl, which is at the far end of the mall. Our daughter loves the Pearl and we love the Bantam Grill. She eats only fish and vegetables so the Pearl menu is perfect for her. I don't think you can go wrong with either place.

“Odd location, good food.”
Reviewed September 14, 2013

Hidden away in a little strip mall, Bantam Grill was an upscale and pleasant surprise. My friend and I got there a little after 5 and all the booths were reserved so we sat at a high top right in the window. No view but the parking lot.
The server was attentive but when my friend didn't want pasta under her mussels he didn't offer to leave it off. I told her to ask directly but she opted for another dish instead. The waiter should have offered. He did suggest a cocktail when asked and I was very happy with the result. We shared the beef carpaccio which was rather ordinary but the Zuppa di Pesce was exceptional. The saffron broth was rich in both color and flavor and the seafood, especially the scallops, was cooked perfectly.
This is a place I'd like to try again. It is owned by the same owner as "The Pearl" in the same strip mall.

“Most unlikely location, most delightful meal...”
Reviewed September 5, 2013

Located in a slightly seedy strip mall, just a few doors down from its sister establishment "Pearl." Bantam has a great bar, a great wine selection and works hard on the local procurement challenge. Lots of brasserie-style comfort foods. Brisket, roast chicken, braised lamb, local charcuterie, whipped potatoes (really good ones), pasta dishes and solid, big desserts. Great bread served with olive oil, good beer on tap. It can be a little inconsistent, so a short chat with the waiter can steer you to items that are ready for prime time as opposed to still getting the kinks out. Menu changes with the season, dress is casual, staff is helpful and attentive.

“This is a great little restaurant, don't let the location deter you”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

This restaurant has character. It has a pub kind of feel to it, but without the drawbacks that can come along with that. The staff are quite engaging, all in their own way. The manager is excellent, you will be seated promptly and served in reasonable time. The menu is smaller, but interesting and the specials are usually excellent. I had a cornish hen and risotti entree special that was outstanding -- I told them they should put it on the regular menus. You are not hurried, if anything is not up to par they take care of it. I had a glass of wine that wasn't as it should be but drank it anyway. When the manager found out he took it off the bill. The desserts are crazy good. If you can only go once, have the chocolate chip lava cookie -- way too good; some of the waitresses eat it for dinner!
