Peterborough, New Hampshire is off the beaten path -- a lovely, iconic New England village miles from the nearest Interstate. But it has a great place to eat in the Bantam Grill. It doesn't sound like it, but Italian is its specialty and it does it very, very well. The brussels sprouts appetizer was light and tasty. The bread was crunchy yet airy. My wife's lamb ragu was excellent: many, big chunks of lamb in a nice red sauce with ribbon pasta done perfectly al dente. My potato gnocchi with mushrooms was also very satisfying, with a couple of different varieties of mushrooms, with bite and texture and a tasty brandy sauce. The staff, from the bartender to the server, were friendly, chatty and knowledgeable. Our only quibble was a fairly short pour on a glass of wine. But the overall quality and ambiance more than made up for it.
