Mount Washington, in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, is absolutely worth a visit! I took the long way via I-93, this way you get to drive through most of the White Mountain park. I chose to drive up the mountain. You can, however go via a cog railway or a guided tour van or simply hike it. Driving is precarious as it is a narrow road with no guardrails. But the views were well worth it! Nothing like looking down at the clouds. There is a cafeteria and gift shops. Also a museum. The Tip Top house has been there since 1854. Great piece of American history. Check it out folks!
We took the Cog Railroad up to the summit and when we arrived at the summit we couldn't see the building from the train because of the fog.
While we were disappointed that we didn't get to take in the views, we nonetheless walked up to the summit sign despite the heavy fog and very gusty winds. The wind was blowing so hard (gusts up to 50 mph) that I almost got knocked off my feet.
Make sure you bring layers because it can get pretty chilly in a hurry.
Inside the facility there is a little snack bar (that closed shortly after we arrived),a post office, a small gift shop and a museum ($2 to visit). Not a whole lot to do if the weather isn't good and you are waiting for your train back down the mountain.
I imagine on sunny / clear days, there isn't enough time to explore before having to go back down.
Definitely an worthwhile experience no matter the weather.
Threat information about the weather station and it’s history. As well as the night the wind hit 231 mph. Strongest wind in the world as recorded by a human.
Great presentation of challenges and sad outcomes in the place which can have the worst weather conditions in the world.
The ride is not for the faint of heart. Way up on curvy dangerous rodes with no guard rails. I could not see anything since we were in a cloud that day. I did this three times over that years. This was my LAST time.
Rode the Cog Rail to the summit of MT. Washington; fantastic experience!
Lucky with low winds and comfortable temp. at top of mt. Drove up in my suv several years ago; "white knuckle" experience; not for nervous nellies. Do the Cog...a little expensive; but so worth it! Check weather for summit before doing trip up mt. whichever way you go.

Temp at top 47* ... wind 49 mph (yeah we froze in august)
temp waiting to pay to get in 81* --- wind (none)
three ways to top
1) Cog rail road (no pets) never took looked great to try one time
2) road service (no pets) -- hint make a kennel to hold the pets at the bottom and I would have taken your service (small fee naturally)
3) your car (not for the weak of heart for sure, look on youtube)
We took the car route up to the top of the mountain. Yes it is windy/winding/narrow on the way up. Pictures for places all over the place. I don't like heights so we listened to the DVD. Once at the top it is very steep and the wind is relentless. At 6k up the views are amazing. Yes they have a gift shop (small) and a place to eat (pizza) at the top. The museum (about 20 min) was ok told the story of the coldest temp ever recorded in the 1930's (global warming LOL). OK now for the ride down. Not as bad cause your not on the side near the cliff. Yes you will need to stop to rest your brakes and take pictures on the way down. I recommend this place for all ages.
