“rooms need an overhaul”
Reviewed November 7, 2011

gave this old inn a second try. Stayed years and years ago and at that time was very dissapointed with tiny and musty room with shared hall bath and creaky floor. But decided to give it a try on a weekend when our favorite place was sold out and we were assured the largest room with private bath and the best view. The views here are as good as advertised which is what makes it such a shame that the Inn is literally crumbling. We arrived late night with two sleepy preschoolers, hauled our gear up the same old carpeted creaky stairs, and opened our room door to find rooms unchanged since the last partial renovation - 1980, perhaps? Old poor quality linens, dusty baseboards, threadbare carpet, lumpy and sagging mattresses. And the bath had cracks in the plaster running across the ceilings and down the walls, peeling vinyl flooring and an ancient tub with no way tub faucet meaning no cleaning the boys for two nights. Neither boy would sleep pronouuncing the sheets scratchy and the blankets musty. The little one awoke with a rash or bites all over his body - we did not find evidence of bedbugs so maybe a rogue mosquito? Almost no air flow with a couple of the old windows inoperable and a small window unit doing blocking the third. A shame as the late summer mountain night air may have helped us all to sleep despite the uncomfortable bedding. Children are charged at the full extra adult rate even when using existing bedding (our room had two queens, but we paid extra for each of the children and we did not have a breakfast included rate). The uncomfortable and outdated rooms are a shame because the restaurnat seems popular and the location is gorgeous - one of the top views in the world. Also, the grounds and gardens are lovely and the inground pool looks clean and inviting. But i really cannot say who this would work for - maybe intrepid hikers used to mountain huts and hostel accomodations but I cannot see them paying the rack rates. I hope that someone saves this lovely old place but until a complete rehab, we won't be back and we travel to N Conway area 2-3 times a year, at least.

Room Tip: There appears to be an apartment, booked by the week, and this has a nice patio and may offer decent...

Hard to sleep with traffic noise. Shower slightly smaller than the one I had on a cruiseship. Service unremarkable. Fantastic view from the dining room, great food too.

Room Tip: Try to get a room furthest back in the Inn - the traffic noise is not quite so bad back there.

Beautiful old inn in the heart of the White Mountains, not overly restored by any means and has all the charms of an old post and beam house. Rooms are smallish, no TV's or phones, but the place has it own bar and restaurant..and they are EXCELLENT! Breakfast came with the room, and that was great as well.
The Inn has a lovely sitting room with ancient fireplace, and the bar area also has fine old furniture for you to sit and socialize.
Room prices are reasonable, and the dinner menu is amazing..prices are not inexpensive but they do reflect the quality of the fare..
If you want a brand new room, and McDonalds pricing there are plenty of options in Conway, but if you want the stagecoach stop experience al la 21 century, look no further.

Room Tip: Be aware that some rooms have no bathroom, but share a bathroom in the hall. Choose carefully if you...

We live nearby and send our out of town guests there and they love it. It is a traditional inn nicely decorated rooms, delicious breakfasts, most rooms do not have tv's (although they did recently install wifi), does have an outdoor swimming pool and cross-country skiing. It is located at a scenic overlook so has amazing views.

Room Tip: ask for one of the view rooms

This inn is a charming place to escape the city. We went during the holiday season and the decorations were out of this world. The locations was a perfectly located (~2 miles from the center of town) and is one of the few places in town with wonderful views of Mount Washington. The dinner/bar were convenient and the included breakfast was quite possibly the best breakfast I have ever had.

Did stay here at this Inn, spacious room with private bath. Found the menu a bit pricey so decided to go out for dinner in Jackson NH. Rooms were clean and large. Breakfast was lovely and because we visited this during the week, it was only us staying the night but there was a few people eating dinner.

We enjoyed a large, comfortably furnished room at the 1785 Inn that shared one of the inn's best features: the amazing view out back towards the White Mountains. The food, both dinner and breakfast, were outstanding, and we enjoyed the fact that the inn had a much more international clientele than the average US lodging. All in all, I'd say it was worth the price, especially given the convenience of having a cozy bar and fine restaurant downstairs. The staff were also exceptionally friendly.
