Traveled the end of March. Temp was 50 degrees and snow was still on the ground. So we could do some small hikes and see the waterfalls with the icicles hanging and snow around. Beautiful. Not busy. There are a few short hikes to see a covered bridge and waterfalls. An easy hike for the novice.

What a beautiful ride! When first moving to New Hampshire we took advanatge of a free Sunday to cruise around. We stumbled upon the Kancamagus Highway and enjoyed every second of it. There are various locations along the highway to stop your car and go sit at a picnic area. This area is also known for the common moose encounters, though we did not see any this particular visit.

This stretch of highway is beautiful year round. You may want to avoid it during busy weekends in the summer and peak foliage. If you get stuck behind a bus you will not be very happy. Take your time, stay safe, enjoy the many scenic rest stops. If you bike across, be prepared for a long, hairy downhill with rude drivers passing you even at top speed. There should be more protection for cyclists, that's why I only gave it 4 stars.

On a fall foliage loop tour of the region, we crossed east to west through White Mountains National Forest on this scenic section of NH 112. This two-lane stretch is an American Scenic Byway. A sign warned drivers of no gas for the next 32 miles. Other signs warned of moose, deer, and congested areas near scenic vistas, waterfalls, and hiking trails. We counted six campgrounds en route. We gained altitude as we drove the winding road up to 2,855-foot Kancamagus Pass. We pulled over at several scenic turnouts. At higher elevations, foliage was already past peak. At lower elevations, foliage was brilliant, especially just before and after the glorious Albany Covered Bridge. like this historic bridge, some attractions in the WMNF charge compulsory user fee areas — be sure to pay. Bring a camera! And bring your patience for the traffic during peak foliage season! With stops, the drive took us 2.5 hours. Without stops, it’s an hour drive. We liked all that we saw.
