We took this route because Mt Washington was under cloud and we wanted to get over to Vermont. Really good surprise to find so much scenery on the way; the falls are excellent to visit - White River falls have adjacent car parking and you can walk down the falls and rocks very easily. Just be a bit careful when you get close in case the rocks are slippy and keep a rein on the kids. All the stopping points are clearly signposted. There are some narrower but steeper falls further up the highway and these require a 20 minute walk up through the woods on a clear trail. It is cooler in the trees and can be a bit wet underfoot near the falls themselves so it's advisable to wear appropriate footwear etc.
