Truly a labor of love in both the original creation and on-going restoration of this wonderful mansion. The technology used in the house seemed way ahead of its time. The design is warm and inviting, not stuffy and formal, as many mansions. The grounds and views of the surrounding mountains are glorious. Definitely worth a visit!
We were all impressed by the construction and the details that went in to the mansion especially considering the lack of town or people around it when it was built. The parts that came from all over the country and even outside the U.S. was interesting. The view and all of the surrounding acreage was phenomenal. The staff was particularly proud of the estate and very knowledgeable. An excellent day trip for a couple or even family with teens.
Enjoyed a little hike to see a waterfall nestled in the mountains , one with nature then on to scenic overlooks of the White Mountains and Lake Winnipesaukee with a trolley 🚋 ride to the Castle in the Clouds, the retirement home of Tom and Olive Plant who amassed his fortune in the manufacturing of ladies shoes in Jamaica Plain, MA. Beautiful grounds and gardens.
We were definitely impressed with the time, effort and expense going into the restoration of Castle in the Clouds. Although it is a self-lead tour, there are excellent signs and writeups in each room that really helpful. The docents located throughout the building are enthusiastic about answering any questions you might have. The restaurant in the carriage house is also very good. This is a must see if you are in the area.
If you like old houses, go! This one is spectacular, and never "improved" by subsequent owners. It has telephones, a brine freezer to make ice cubes, "needle" showers, an automatic organ and more.
We were overwhelmed by the view from the cafe's patio - the food was just a good. The tour of the house and grounds was well done. The ongoing renovations to the property are indicative of the commitment the Castle Preservation Society has for the future of the house.
