“Good local place”
Reviewed August 8, 2013 via mobile

Stayed nearby for a business meeting. Homestead was recommended by hotel. Very attractive. Good food. Prices not too bad. If you eat upstairs make sure you have a flashlight app on your smartphone. Live music when we were there.

“A Good Choice for Lunch”
Reviewed August 5, 2013

We remember this restaurant when it was Silo's Steakhouse. It was the best steakhouse in the area--the service was tops, the atmosphere mellow and relaxed, and the steaks were far more reasonably priced than some fancy tavern just down the road.

We have enjoyed dining there since it became The Homestead. The food is generally good, the portions quite generous. We do note that the servers work on a rotation of which order customers arrive in. We have observed servers who are working the outside porch, an inside dining room, and even upstairs all at once. This slows their service down noticeably. Most places assign certain areas. We have seen how this runs servers ragged, especially since they also have to bus their own tables and reset them. We did notice the manager helping out to deliver an order when it came up and the responsible server was tied up waiting a table on the deck.

On a recent visit for lunch, we chose the bacon-wrapped maple scallops as an appetizer. These are always plump and delectable. This time was no exception. My companion ordered a Panini with chicken, cheese, and avocado. I chose the Philly steak sandwich without the cheese. Both of us opted for the sweet potato fries without salt. Our meals were substantial enough to preclude our eating supper several hours later and we had no room for dessert. My companion's entree salad was almost a meal in itself. One beverage arrived with a fruit-fly in the glass, but the server was prompt in replacing the beverage with another “clean” serving.

Both of the servers working our room were hard-working hustlers. One overheard us discussing the merits and demerits of joining their email club, and gently interrupted to clarify any misconceptions we had. This employee must love working there to champion her employer like that.

“No reason to go back”
Reviewed July 21, 2013

The gentleman at reception was very friendly. Told us our waitress was Sheila and she was one of the best. She must have been having an off day. No water, no bread, served 16 oz. draft but charged for 22 oz. Twice. The other waitress was all over her clients. Maybe her name is Sheila too. :) Waitress took leftovers for wrapping and when we opened the lobster and macaroni two days later from the fridge there was no lobster in it. My wife was not amused. The hamburger was very good and quite large too.

“outdated menu”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

My daughter and I went one recent Friday night to this family food destination, where we were seated immediately. It was busy and service was slow and inattentive. We had to remind the waitress to pick up our second round of wine. The menu was as outdated as the decor, featuring safe, tried and true standards like baked stuffed haddock. We ordered a summer special and the one dish on the regular menu which seemed up to date with fresh veggies tossed with chicken or fish. The very minimal salads were predictable. The bread and cheese spread were lousy. The quality of the food was good but time has stood still here. Prices were not too high. I would return if the menu was updated out of the 80's! When it was the Steak Loft, it had a jazz piano and upscale food and we loved it. Now it feels touristy.

“Loved It!”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

Based on the reviews we decided to try this casual restaurant after shopping at the nearby Merrimack Outlet Mall. We went for a late lunch/early dinner so there was no wait. There is outside dining at umbrella tables on the wrap around porch, but it was too hot and humid on the day we went to do that. The delightfully cold enclosed porch room was perfect for us. The menu has lots of choices and the service and food were very good. The barn like décor is warm and inviting and we especially liked the casual "Tavern" area on the second floor. There are lots of sofas, easy chairs, coffee tables and flat screen TVs as well as the expected bar. The large stone fireplace in the center of the room would definitely add to the ambience on a cold winter night. This is a perfect area to meet friends for drinks and appetizers. We tried the Appetizer Sampler (crab cake, chicken wings, potato skins, scallops wrapped in bacon, and steak and cheese spring roll) and loved it. We have found a new favorite place and can't wait to return.
