We came to New Hampshire to climb Indian Head, which friends recommended to us as a good first hike in the White Mountains. We went up the Indian Head Trail, which starts just south of Indian Head resort on the other side of the road. This trail is poorly marked and very challenging. We stopped several times on the way up to catch our breath. The last 500 feet are very steep. The view from the top is incredible! We were joined by quite a few people, most of whom had come up on the other trail, that starts from the parking lot for the Flume. We decided to take that trail down, and were glad we did. That trail is well used, well marked, and not as rough as the trail we went up.The only drawback was when we got to the trailhead at the Flume parking lot, we had to walk another mile along the road to get back to our car.If you decide to take this hike, allow two hours to get to the top, maybe a little less time to come down.
