My fiance and I are getting married near Keene and stayed at the Colony House for a night while we took care of some business related to the wedding. It was lovely. The house is a little rundown on the outside, but inside the historical details are well-preserved, the rooms are pleasant and spacious and there are small details that made our stay special, like comfy bathrobes and candy on the nightstand.
Breakfast was excellent. There was enough variety to satisfy anyone's tastes, including cereal, bagels, fresh fruit, and meat and cheese, among other delicious items. There are some drinks stocked in the fridge at all times and the owner gave us beverages to take for the ride home. She is not only warm and welcoming, but she is truly interesting to chat with. She is very familiar with the history of the area and has many stories to tell.
When we arrived, no one was there to greet us. There was a note and a key. This was fine with us, but since it is a small operation, don't expect immediate service upon arriving; we still felt right at home, though. Also, they don't take credit cards (or at least prefer not to), so that's something else to be aware of. It's a little pricey for the area, but for what you get, it seems reasonable.
All in all, we will stay there again hopefully, and will certainly recommend it to our wedding guests as a homey, interesting place to stay!
