My mum and I booked to stay here in the Autumn of last year. We had booked this holiday as we are keen amateur photographers and wanted to see New England in the fall. Unfortunately for us it was a poor one, very wet and poor colours, but never mind, that's how it goes.

The b&b is in a lovely location and very quiet. We were very pleased with our room, very clean and comfortable. We'd expected to be shown our room, but when we arrived the owner disappeared for ten minutes leaving us standing there. This was how things were to be during our visit.

On the downside we personally didn't find it as friendly as the other b&b's we stayed in, and being constantly told to "read the rules" if we asked a question, a bit off putting. We did meet up with the other guests over breakfast and shared a giggle at "the rules" and the admonishments we'd had when breaking them.

Though not advertised, we found when we got there, we were able to connect wirelessly to the internet via my laptop and I could email home. A great plus for me.

I can thoroughly recommend the location, cleanliness, comfort and food of this b&b, but we would personally be put off returning by the fact we found it difficult to relax. We were pleased to move on. The atmosphere could well suit others, it just wasn't for us.

At the last second, I decided to take a ski vacation with my son during the Feb. school vacation in 2001. Looking for a low-key home-style B&B, I stumbled across Windy Hill on the web. Fortunately for me, someone had cancelled their plans and a room was available, just when we wanted it!

Anne is an accommodating host in the vein of Walter Matthau, making sure that we took off our wet clothes and boots before tromping all over the house. We understand that her son was generally around also to help out, although he was off to Katahdin that week to do some technical climbing.

There was a family of 5-6 dominating the house when we arrived, but they were checking out the next day and we really didn't get a chance to meet them. However, two couples arrived the next afternoon an annual long weekend that they do together, so we enjoyed getting to know them. In fact, one night we all joined forces for a guest-cooked meal, planned by Anne and executed by the 6 guests. We had a blast!

So this can be a stay where you just bunk, or you can blend and participate. I think you could milk cows, too, if you wanted to help! If you are looking for luxury, don't bother. If you are looking to be welcomed and to be comfortable, drop in!

Nice skiing right next door at Black Mtn. although conditions were bitterly cold after a mid-week thaw/rain, leaving most runs pretty difficult, so we only skiied one day there and then ventured down to Cranmore (better snowmaking and grooming) for the other two days. Eat in the house, or venture down into Jackson and the neighboring villages for meals.

Outdoor hottub on the porch was great for the Scandanavian in you, lacking only the birch switches (and I think you could ask for those if you wanted them). Be warned that the house is up a rather steep dirt road that can be a little tricky in the winter after a snowstorm. 4WD is advised.
