“Nice Inn with potential”
Reviewed January 3, 2012

We recently stayed over New Years weekend. We had a great time, the hostess Jordan and host Richard were very pleasant. Had a very nice dinner on New Years, then drinks by the fire in the Tavern. Rooms were lovely but like the other reviews the rooms on the 2nd floor tend to be noisy. Loved the coffee in the morning, great mugs.
When checking out I requested a final invoice and was told there was not one. We have no idea what the final total was. Maybe just add a sentence to your welcome letter stating no check out required. When booking online a signature is usually required on arrival.
We enjoyed our stay and will come back, but I think the owners need to be much more visible during the morning and early evening hours especially if the staff is busy working.

Room Tip: I would try the 3rd floor

I feel terrible for the wait staff that works at this establishment. We arrived at 5:45PM with 2 kids for dinner and didn't see our food until 7:30...and it was cold. The waitress was embarrassed. We watched tables walk out on their bill of drinks b/c they waited too long for their food and I witnessed the manager making the waitress pay out for the tab that was walked out on. This is a poorly mismanaged place and kitchen and the wait staff should not be punished for that. Our food was ok...it was a shame that our and others' experience that evening was a joke. The cover of the book looks great, but the story sucks.

We returned to the Wildcat Inn for Thanksgiving this year for another warm and welcoming holiday. We arrive on time to enjoy a Thanksgiving buffet that included everything from the usual turkey to some excellent haddock, a great prime rib and a slightly dry stuffed pork loin. Nice selection of vegetables, soups, salad, rolls, corn bread, crackers, and cheese. Food was good, service was excellent. The owner, kitchen staff, waitresses and chefs came by to ask how we were enjoying our meal. We notice they made a special accomodation for a small boy at another table who would only eat a hot dog. The desserts were greatly improved from my last review, this time keeping the whip cream in a special container on the side and the dessert selection was expanded. Just be aware that they will charge for every non-alcoholic refill drink. We truly enjoyed our experience at this New England Inn and will be sure to come back in the future.

We stayed 2 nights in room #5 on the second floor of the Wildcat Inn. It is a small 2-room suite with the bed in one room and the TV in the other. The room can be a bit noisey with the constant "thudding" sound of what we now think was the swinging kitchen door... late into the night and also early morning. I would suggest to ask for a room in the front of the Inn.

We noticed that the room had "mosquitoes" flying around. We then realized that the AC unit's expandable sides were not tight fitting and the mosquitoes were coming in through the large spaces. We had to shove tissues into the spaces to prevent the mosquitoes from coming into the room. The shower "stall" floor drain was loose and the linoleum on the bathroom floor is lifting. The towels were old and very thin but what bothered us the most was that some were stained so badly that they looked like they were the Inn's cleaning rags. Unacceptable!!

When housekeeping cleaned the room, they did not give us clean towels and we are not sure if the room actually got cleaned or what they actually did, as we found our dirty towels that we had placed on the floor, hung back up. We had to ask the main housekeeper for some clean towels and to take the dirty ones. She was VERY apologetic and VERY helpful...said that it was a new person that she had asked to help her with housekeeping that day.

We did not eat at the Inn Pub but had drinks one night at the bar. The female bar server was not friendly and never even talked to us after serving our drinks....and there were only 4 of us seated at the bar. I would suggest food and cocktails at the "Red Fox", a nice walk over the covered bridge and down across the main street. We ate and had drinks in the Red Fox Pub.. Food was great, bar servers were VERY friendly.

There is no brkfast served at the Wildcat Inn, just juice and coffee...but right next door is "Yesterday's Cafe" which is very good but pricey. Our basic brkfast for 2 was $30 (with tip). I would suggest walking past Yesterday's and going to the cute little cafe past the little school on the right. Not as many choices but much more affordable for basic breakfast and coffee.

In summary, this very charming old New England Inn located in a great little village area has lots of potential. It is just taking time for all the "potential" at this Inn to be met.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the front of the Inn on the second floor.

The Wildcat Inn is a welcome departure from the formulaic B&Bs that seem to be everywhere in this part of New England. Ironically, that's because it is a true old-fashioned inn. The main level features an inviting bar (with live entertainment some nights) and series of small, intimate dining rooms (with excellent and reasonably-priced food). The rooms are upstairs. Jackson, NH is a very small village and the Wildcat Inn seems to be the epicenter; even the locals show up here for drinks and/or dinner. Two things some travelers might find off-putting: 1) there's no wi-fi (although if you're lucky you might pick up a signal from the hotel across the street), and 2) there's no breakfast included (but right next door is Yesterday's Cafe, which serves up a great breakfast).

Room Tip: If you like to retire early, be sure to request a room over the dining room; those over the bar can...

I stayed 2 nights and got to experience Hoot Night on Tuesday in the tavern. As a single woman, I felt uncomfortable at first but was well taken care of and the host made sure that he seated me with friendly locals. Good wine menu, excellent food, fun music... My bedroom and sitting room was very comfortable, great shower, slept like a log until the smell of coffee wafted up the stairs in the morning. Again, a great staff, very friendly and helpful and they made me feel comfortable and right at home.

Room Tip: Suites are nice with a sitting room.

THE BAD NEWS....We had made reservations for this visit. It was a Xmas gift from our children. We scanned the web site to see what to expect and it sounded great. The web site suggested checking in after 3pm. We arrived at about 4:30pm. The Inn appeared closed. As we got out of our car to check it out we were met, on the other side of the door by a women who was yelling at us not to park there. We had to yell back that we were guests there. She opened the door, reminded we could not park there and handed us an envelope stuck to the door. She said that was our room information and told us where to park out back. At this point, if we did not have the prepaid gift certificate,
I would have turned around and left. Who needs this kind of aggrevation. I asked if we could drop our stuff and then drive out back whick she finally agreed to. We came in the back door and she directed us to a stairway and we asked her which room. She said it was on our info sheet. It was not. She finally looked it up. It was on the 3rd floor.. We went up and found our room. Discovered no hot water. We decided to go down to the tavern for a drink and a meal. Before entering the tavern, we found hostile host and told her about the hot water. Her reply was so helpful..she said, "Oh, we have hot water down here". Don't you love it? I strongly suggested we will have hot water by the AM. She made no comment. .After our tavern visit, we headed for the dining area and were yelled at for trying to go in without her showing us a table. She did accomplish that without incident....Barely.

GOOD NEWS. The Inn is very New Hampshire, purposely retaining that decor which we enjoy. The tavern was very nice, good servers and entertainment. The food was very good. WED NITES are 2 for 1 prices and they do not scimp. Choices were excellant.

If you can avoid the hostess, you will have a great time.
