“Strange, Unfriendly and Cold Place”

Hartmann Model Railroad & Toy Museum

This place is a joke!

What an utter tourist trap and rip off. The shop is nice with many fine model train items but the people who run it are very unfriendly and unwelcoming especially to children.

We stopped late August 2007. My husband and I were with our two year old son. There are signs reminding people to mind their children. The owners also remind you! Our son was not misbehaving but we were told twice to mind him.

After purchasing $20 worth of small trucks were were told we had to purchase specific items ( junk really ) on two tables as you enter the store to have a ride on the train.

We inquired if we could purchase tickets. The owner then launched into a bitter speech about how the town of Intervale did not allow them to sell tickets because they are not an attracttion, blah, blah, blah.

The items required for purchase to ride the train are overpriced ($5-$10) trinkets ( think 70s kitschy) that nobody would want- hollow plastic dolls, ugly t-shirts. You get the idea.

We left feeling we'd had a bizarre, twilight-zone like experience. It's too bad because they could have a nice little business if they warmed up to people.

Spent $5 apiece to see the rairoad models. Not well lit, and dust scenes, ran for 3 minutes. The panoramas were o.k. but not special. Large collection of different models was excellent in display cases.

I visited Hartmann's in July 2006 with my wife and two boys, then ages three and four. there is a $6.00 admission, but I can't recall if kids were a lower admission fee. Upon entering, I most certainly recall being rather brusquely warned by the male owner to watch our kids inside the store since there were expensive items there. Okay, I thought, small children, intricate workings, fair enough, though I thought he could have been a lot more cordial about it. No incidents occurred, since we supervise our children. The displays were interesting and well done. There is also an outdoor miniature train that you can ride, but only if you buy something inside the store that specifically advertises Hartmann's. If you buy something else, even if it is considerably more expensive, and expect to be allowed on the train, you may be sharply rebuked by the female owner, and your attention will be directed to an assortment of poor quality souvenirs advertising Hartmann's, which you must buy in order to be admitted to the outdoor train ride. The owners may have been having a bad day. In any case, they were two extremely rude and repellent people that day. If you really love trains, by all means go, and if youdon't mind dealing with people who seem to love nothing else, you won't be disappointed
