“Great location and friendly service, but subpar accommodations.”
Reviewed July 29, 2007

We planned a weekend, as a family (wife and 5 year old son), visiting Storyland in NH and chose the New England Inn because of its proximity (about 5-10 minute drive), a heated indoor pool and AAA rates.

We stayed in one of the white cottages (Granite Lake) near the restaurant, while our friends stayed in the one next to ours. Parking was right next to the cottages which made luggage transfer very easy. The rooms were comfortably sized, with a sitting room (sofa, two twin beds, TV/VCR, and mini-fridge) and a bedroom (two queen beds). Only the bedroom had an air conditioner which worked adequately. Overall the room was clean, but (as mentioned in another review) had a damp (read this as musty) smell and the furniture could have used some updating. Our allergies flared during the stay. The walls were very thin and you could hear almost everything going on in the adjacent cottage. We spent very little time at the cottage so did not explore alternatives, although the lodge across the street seemed very nice.

There was lawn space surrounding the cottages, which allowed for an impromptu game of catch, Frisbee or soccer. It was particularly quiet there and the setting is somewhat rustic, nestled among the pine trees. There was also a wonderful garden there, with a variety of visiting butterflies.

They had a wonderful new indoor pool, with an adjacent fitness room, that was a bit chilly but refreshing.

A hot breakfast at the restaurant was included and was fine, although nothing to write home about. On one day, we received a choice of pancakes, eggs to order, or French toast and on another, we received a "take it or leave it" sampler of pancakes, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns and scrambled eggs, which made breakfast difficult for a finicky 5-year-old. Service was nice and friendly. The facilities were clean.

Overall, a nice quiet area for the family representing a fair (although not outstanding) value, very close to Storyland. Good for a large family group. If you have allergies, the white cottages may not be the most comfortable.

My husband and I just got back from a weekend getaway in the mountains. We had a mix-up last fall, and the Snowflake Inn could not acommodate us for our 3rd night stay, so we were very lucky to get a room at NEI for our last night. Had I known it was so cozy, we would have booked the whole weekend there. We stayed in the Lodge that time but last weekend we stayed in one of the log cabins. LOVED IT!!!! It was huge inside and so cozy and rustic looking. The jacuzzi was a perfect size, and very clean. The bed was comfortable, with big plump pillows. The bathroom was nice, had a clean shower and nice thick towels. The fireplace made it so romantic, and the set up of the room was perfect. I have no complaints to give, for it was all so wonderful. Well, I guess if I were to say anything at all, it would be the 10 % gratuity for maid service included in the charge. That cost us 43 dollars and we were only there for 2 nights. But in defense of that, maybe they don't often get a tip if it is left optional, and let's face it, a clean room is very important and rates high for us. It was so quiet there, which we loved because we were there for a romantic time together, without the kids. We ate one night at Tuckermans tavern and the food was good. The staff at the inn, and the restaurant were all very nice, and always smiling. I would stay there again in a heartbeat!!! I would recommend either the log cabin, or the lodge. The lobby in the lodge was incredible. Full of beautiful mounted animals............what a nice touch. A lot of thought and a lot of work went into that place. Oh, on the breakfast.............I read someone said the room was dark and dreary.............not so.............it was very cozy and warm. We had a sampler breakfast each day, which we enjoyed very much.

  • Liked — Log cabin was rustic, cozy and romantic.
  • Disliked — Loved it all.

My husband and I spent 2 nights here and had a wonderful, peaceful getaway. There isn't much snow up there so the Inn was pretty quiet (as were all the hotels in the area). We stayed in one of the log cabins and just loved it. There was only one other couple staying in the cabin next to us. We had a bit of snow overnight (about 3") and they cleaned off our car before they left in the morning. :) How neighborly!
The room itself was great. Fireplace, King Bed, Jacuzzi in the room, Bose radio and cable TV (oh yay, 24/7 sports......lol) We got takeout from Tuckerman's Tavern. We did go in to the bar for a drink and it was very cozy. There was only one other couple in there eating dinner (our car cleaners??) but it's all nonsmoking so we didn't stay long. Also, the bartender was sick (she had just taken some EmergenC) and pretty much kept to herself. Otherwise, great place to hang out and watch some sports on the 4 TVs.
We just loved this Inn and can't wait to go back in the fall. My only problem was with the gratuity for the maid that's factored into the bill.....We were there Sunday afternoon till Tuesday morning and the charge was $35.00. The maid only came into the room 1 afternoon and changed the towels. She didn't change sheets, vacuum or really clean anything. $35.00 is pretty steep for a couple of pretty skimpy towels. Oh.....and bring your own pillows. Otherwise........We recommend this place to anyone who wants to just get away!

My fiance and I recently stayed at this B+B. The suite we stayed in was across the street from the main building and restaurant. We found that the room was very nice, new, rustic and clean for the most part. However, there were mysterious stains on the pillow shams, so those went promptly on the floor. The jacuzzi was clean, but very small. The TV wouldn't go above halfway, so you couldn't hear it above the jacuzzi. We assumed this was to prevent it from bothering other guests, but the room next to our bedroom had the TV loud and we could hear it perfectly while trying to sleep on Sunday morning at 7am.
There was no view out of the back of the unit, just trees. The units are non-smoking, but we smelled someone smoking in the morning on Sunday and it was disgusting. It also smelled of smoke in the main lobby.
The included breakfast is your choice of pancakes OR eggs. We had the pancakes, and they were dry and unappetizing. The towels were small and not very soft. The fan in the bedroom was noisy when it was at the high setting.
When we checked out there was a "Gratuity Charge" of $21.00/day, which they attributed as going to the waitstaff and room cleaners. Then why did we tip them?? This place is *way* too expensive for what it is, coming out to be more then I pay to stay in NYC at a nice hotel. Try someplace else. It would be worth it if the price was around $100/night.

My husband and I had stayed at New England a few years ago and enjoyed it very much so we decided to go back. We went on a mid week special in one of the little red cottages.
We like the privacy of the cottages and found it very clean. THe jucuzzi is very relaxing.
We also like that the restaurant is right there. Tuckermans has a wide selection of food and the people are very friendly. The main Inn where you go for breakfast is a little dark and dreary but the food was fine. The older lady in the Inn who served us was very pleasant.

We recently visited The New England Inn and were very impressed. The rooms were very nice with a jacuzzi tub and fireplace- perfect after a day of skiing. At night we went over to Tuckerman's, their restaurant and tavern, for dinner and the company. The food was excellent and the waitstaff very friendly. Todd, a partner in the inn, took several minutes to make sure we were enjoying ourselves and to point out the attractions in the area that we shouldn't miss.

We left planning our next trip back. I cannot say enough about this place- I highly recommend it for both the lodging and the friendly, helpful staff.

My husband and I just returned from a trip to MA, NH and ME. We stayed at the New England Inn for two nights in NH and it was very nice. We were helped with our luggage, checking in was easy; Carol was very helpful telling us where to go and gave us coupons for the outlets and activities. Gary also asked us if he could assist several times. The room was neat and tidy, bed was comfortable and the water pressure was good.
The best feature of this place is the restaurant next door which adjoins the Inn. Tuckerman's offers anything you can think of to eat, and if you get the dinner as well as breakfast offering, you get several courses in your meal. This is quite a popular place, so make reservations if you don't have dinner included in your stay. Todd made sure we were seated exactly on time - no wait. All in all this is a fun place to stay; the managers bend over backwards to serve you. I would definitely return - although my husband and I are thinking of returning to the White Mountains permanently. The area is fabulous!!
