Lots of families do this hike and it's easy to see why. A fairly easy 30 minute uphill with amazing views of Squam Lake, Lake Winnipesaukee and the surrounding area at the top. It was featured in the tourist promotions for New Hampshire! Great spot for a picnic. Sprawling rock ledges on the top so there is room for everyone.

As mountain hikes go, it is a walk in the park. As views go, the one overlooking Squam Lake at the path's end is breathtaking. The path is wide and well-maintained, with steps made from logs and rocks in some places. Our 9-year-old sat down for a breather once on the way up. Our 7-year-old tripped twice and broke his walking stick, but he's on the clutzy side. All in all, it is a pleasant hike that seems unlikely to pose a challenge to any able-bodied person.

As you near the top, a sign reading "Almost There" points you left. The path leads to large, open rock ledges overlooking the expansive lake, complete with islands and hills in the distance. Great place for a picnic. Definitely a quality spot for memorable photos.

My kids circled back to the sign, heard voices and followed the path straight ahead (rather than left, as the sign directs). Not far back is another outcropping of rocks. Once there, the people we heard warned us to be careful near one of the waist-high boulders with a crevice in it. Jutting out from the crevice was the coiled body of what appeared to be a juvenile rattlesnake getting a little sun - it is Rattlesnake Mountain, after all.

The walk down was easy and, not surprisingly, faster than the walk up. We learned on the way down that it pays to get a reasonably early start. We started hiking somewhere around 9:30 am, leaving us mostly alone on the hike up and among a relatively small group at the top. We passed a parade of people making their way up as we headed down at about 11:30 am.

We hike here every time we come to the White Mountains. It is a very easy hike with spectacular views. There is nothing like it anywhere else. Even young children can hike this. It is a great first hiking experience as the views are so spectacular. You can see Squam Lake and the surrounding mountains. It is wonderful!
