Beautiful view for such an easy short walk. Not much to dislike.

I'm a very slow and plodding hiker, but I love hiking in the winter. Rattlesnake Mountain makes a wonderful hike - whether you just go up West Rattlesnake or get a bit more ambitious and take the ridge trail to the summit of East Rattlesnake! Even though the weather had been warm, we still encountered icy conditions and I was glad I had my micro-spikes! (One member of our group didn't and he slipped and slid all the way!) Spectacular views from both peaks!

We climbed Rattlesnake Mountain while visiting nearby Meredith/Lake Winnipesaukee. We saw lots of very little kids, older folks, and out-of-shape folks making the climb, so anyone who's tempted should feel confident they can do it.

This is the best-maintained trail up a "mountain" (really a bluff) I've ever seen -- the first quarter-mile was basically gravel-lined steps, with lots of channels to keep the trail from eroding in the rain. The summit is 0.9 miles from the parking lot -- about 30 minutes of casual climbing. The first quarter mile is the steepest/hardest, so don't give up if you think it's too tough at the beginning.

The views are spectacular from the bluff -- a wide granite area with plenty of room to find your own little space. It was foggy the day we climbed, but the views of Squam Lake and its islands were great. A local told us that on a clear day, you can see Winnipesaukee and the surrounding mountains, which would be awesome.

There are lots of intersecting and looping trails in the area, so if you're looking for more activity you can keep going. Across the street is the Mt. Morgan Trail -- 2200 feet (Rattlesnake is 1247) and a number of other peaks along the Crawford Ridge Trail. Something for everyone!
